History: (Challengers of the Unknown vol. 1 #46)-Gargoyle was born a hideous and deformed hunchback. Society rejected him, so he turned to crime, committing daring robberies and then using his extraordinary agility to climb buildings and escape. He amassed enough money to make two headquarters, a city apartment and an island fortress. The Challengers of the Unknown encountered him one night, but he easily escaped them. He swung to a nearby rooftop and met a blind girl named Laura. Overjoyed at finding someone not driven away by his appearance, the Gargoyle struck up a friendship with her. Gargoyle used his fortune to pay for eye surgery, curing her blindness. When she laid her eyes on Gargoyle for the first time she was horrified, and he became enraged. He tried to strangle her, but was interrupted by the Challengers. Feeling utterly rejected he retreated to his island fortress and set a number of traps for the Challengers. Only Ace Morgan was able to escape all of the traps, and was named team leader for capturing the Gargoyle.
