History(Sea Devils #29) - The Golden People were a technologically advanced undersea race that used gold to extend their lifespans. They were ruled by the Golden Goddess, who believed that one day their legendary gold king would arrive and wed her. They existed in solitude for millennia until a crack opened in the sea floor, exposing their kingdom. Lucas, a disreputable diver, discovered them, and tried to steal the secrets of their gold process. The Golden People put him under a beam that transformed him into a giant monster, and sent him away. Lucas, in his monstrous form, battled the Sea Devils, who were also exploring the opening in the sea floor, before his humanity was restored. The Golden People abducted the Sea Devils, and after the science council examined them the Goddess chose Sea Devil Dane to take the test of the kings to see if he was worthy of her. Dane wanted no part of it, but she forced him into a tank to fight the dragon-like monster Valdo. Dane tossed a spear into the monster’s mouth, wounding it, and it fell into the tank’s spikes, impaling itself. The Goddess told Dane he’d passed, and she’d give him time to say goodbye to his friends before she executed them and made him her king. Dane promised to save his friends, but the Goddess was eavesdropping, and, outraged at her betrayal, decided Dane would die alongside the rest of them. In the nick of time the International Sea Devils and their golden giant robot Neptimus. The Sea Devils escaped, and the fissure opening up to the world of the Golden People closed. Lucas started dying, and confessed that it was his fault that the Golden people hated the surface world, and that he deserved his death.
