He discovered they were running a racket printing fake Cur-It cough syrup labels to stick on sweetened water that they sold. Twillins fled to Terry Sloane's Muddyville Cur-It production center to expose the hoods, but he was pursued by Toothy who threw him into a stream near the Cur-It plant. Waste chemicals from the Cur-It plant combined in the stream, and the mix of chemicals turned Twillins from a diminutive mousy man into a hulking beast. In anger he struck Toothy, but Twillins wasn't used to his newfound strength, and his blow broke Toothy's neck. He felt the police would be after him for accidentally killing Toothy, so he might as well use his new powers to start a life of crime. As Gorilla Ganty he took over Toothy's old mob and promised to make them big time. Mr. Terrific confronted Gorilla and his gang, but Gorilla easily overpowered him. Gorilla physically outclassed Terrific, so Terrific spilled ammonium nitrate on a radiator, creating laughing gas that subdued Gorilla and his gang.
