GRAVEDIGGER

Real Name: Captain Ulysses Hazard

Class: Human

Occupation: Commando

Group Affiliation: United States Army

Known Relatives: unnamed mother

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Europe, formerly Birmingham, Alabama, circa 1942

First Appearance: Men of War #1 (August, 1977)

Powers: Gravedigger was a skilled fighter and possessed peak human strength and speed. He was an accomplished marksman, and could kill enemies in numerous ways using his bare hands or whatever weapon or potential weapon was at his disposal.

History: Ulysses was afflicted with polio as a child, but through his indominitable will he forced himself to crawl, then walk, and then run. He built his body to perfection, and learned several martial arts while he overcame his disease. Ulysses enlisted in the army during WWII and became a skilled marksman, but because he was black he was put on grave detail instead of being assigned to the combat unit he deserved to be on. After a friend was killed by a Nazi plane, his brain snapped, and he went AWOL, making his way to Washington, D.C. and breaking into the Pentagon to prove his abilities. The Joint Chiefs of Staff code-named him Gravedigger, and made him a one-man commando unit during the war.
