History:
(Earth 2 #10, 11) - The Tower of God was a repository for chaos magic, and the Great Beast was the guardian of the tower. Khalid Ben-Hassin briefly served as the vessel for the ancient magician Nabu when he wore the Helmet of Fate, but finding himself unable to control Nabu's magic he banished the helmet to the Tower of God. Wotan wanted the power of Nabu for theirself and forced Khalid and his ally Flash into the tower, holding Flash’s mother Mrs. Garrick as a hostage to motivate them. Nabu’s magic had completely taken over the tower, altering it’s structure and turning it into the Tower of Fate. They wandered the twisting spiraling halls of magic until they were confronted by the tower’s guardian, the Great Beast. Flash scooped up Khalid, and raced away to safety. He said he’d go up against the Great Beast alone to give Khalid time to find the Helmet of Nabu. Flash admitted he wasn’t sure if he’d survive, and Khalid said he was unbelievably brave. Flash demurred, saying he had to make sure his mother staid safe, and he’d promised a dying god he’d try his best to be a hero. Flash drew out the Great Beast, but it made short work of him. Flash distracted the Great Beast long enough for Khalid to find the helmet, and Flash’s heroism inspired him to accept the burden of being Nabu’s vessel. He put on the helmet and declared himself Dr. Fate. He subdued the Beast, saving Flash’s life.
