History(Earth 2 #1-3) - Alan Scott, media mogul, presented a documentary about Darkseid’s invasion of Earth 2, which raged for years and cost the lives of the Wonders of the World, Earth 2’s foremost protectors. Alan was on a flight to China and looked down from his flight as it passed over Italy, which was now a crater in the ground after the Darkseid War. Alan made a deal in Beijing to gain ownership of GBC’s satellites after negotiations with a client firm. He met his longterm boyfriend Sam Zhao in Hong Kong, and Zhao said he wanted to take him to the countryside, knowing that if Alan staid in the city he’d be continually distracted by business. Alan was pleased with the idea of a romantic excursion, and they left on a bullet train. Alan felt bad that their business ventures kept them apart for so long, and asked Zhao if he’d move his business to America so they could spend more time together. Alan produced a wedding ring and proposed, but at that moment the train was rocked by an explosion. Alan, burned and badly injured, crawled from the wreckage of the train when he was confronted by a green flame that spoke to him. The flame said he had been chosen, and healed his wounds, apologizing that it had been able to save him but not his lover Sam. The flame was the embodiment of Earth’s enemy and had chosen him as Earth’s champion because a threat was approaching that threatened the world’s survival. Alan asked why the Earth hadn’t chosen a champion when Apokolips invaded, and the flame replied that Superman was the suns champion, and the coming threat would make Darkseid and Apokolips look inconsequential. Alan Scott accepted the responsibility, and was empowered with the energy of the Green, becoming Green Lantern. The flame said he needed a personal object to focus his power, and Green Lantern chose the engagement ring he was about to give to Sam, which became the conduit of the Green. Green Lantern asked the flame about the champions that came before him, and the flame assured him he’d understand everything in time. Green Lantern’s first task was to uncover who caused the train crash that killed Sam, and the flame said its’ job was done, and he was now on his own. Lantern tended to the survivors and helped a rescue team bring them to safety. The dead were placed in bodybags, and Lantern knelt at Sam’s body, saying everything he did from that point on to help humanity would be to honor Sam’s memory.

(Earth 2 #4-6) - When the Green chose its’ champion the Grey responded by waking its’ avatar Solomon Grundy. Grundy’s revival caused plant life around the world to wither and die, and he attacked the White House to draw Green Lantern’s attention. Grundy went on a murderous rampage, saying the world had its’ chance and it was time for life on the planet to end. Hawkgirl and the Flash raced to Washington and engaged him in battle. Hawkgirl told Flash to focus on rescuing survivors because he was far too inexperienced to deal with Grundy. Green Lantern sensed Grundy’s presence and joined Hawkgirl in combating him, but every time they wounded Grundy he instantly regenerated. The World Army dispatched Atom to the scene to make his public debut, and after growing to giant size Atom stepped on Grundy, crushing him. Hawkgirl panicked when she saw Atom, saying she wasn’t going back to the World Army, but he said he had his orders and grabbed her. Hawkgirl had gone AWOL from the World Army, and Atom had his orders to bring her back into the fold. The World Army also ordered him to detain Flash and Green Lantern, but they all fought back. Grundy revived, wrapped Atom in fungus, and began absorbing his lifeforce. Flash freed Atom and was overly pleased with himself, liking the idea of being a superhero and eager to prove himself. Green Lantern fought Grundy to a standstill, and knew he’d have to enter the Grey to have a chance of beating him. His spirit traveled into the Grey, and Atom Hawkgirl and Flash protected hi prone body from Grundy. The Grey tried to convince Green Lantern that it was time for life on Earth to end so new life could arise and evolve, even offering him a place by their side as a servant, showing him an image of Sam Zhao and saying they could reunite Lantern with his love. The World Army called in Terry Sloan to advise them on the situation because Grundy’s presence would mean the end of life on Earth within the day. Sloan said the only solution was a tactical nuclear strike, and over World Army commander Amar Khan’s objections nuclear missiles were launched at the White House. Green Lantern embraced “Sam,” but soon enough realized he was merely an illusion and lashed out at the Grey. He realized most of the Grey’s power was tied up in Grundy, and the Grey could not take that power back, having fully invested in Grundy’s ability to end life on Earth. Green Lantern flew Grundy into space and launched him at the moon where there was no life for him to corrupt and draw power from. He also managed to divert the missile strike, sending the nuclear missiles into space. Khan was relieved that lives had been spare, but Terry Sloan merely found the unfolding events interesting. GL, Flash and Hawkgirl slipped away from Atom, who still had orders to capture them. Green Lantern tapped into the Green to repair what damage he could from the Grey’s assault on the planet. Flash was excited that they were new wonders, and suggested they form a new superhero team. He told GL they’d both been given powers to combat a coming threat to Earth, so it only made sense for them to work together. GL said he appreciated Flash and Hawkgirl’s help, but he would be fine protecting the planet all by himself. He flew off and Hawkgirl commented that he was an arrogant and stubborn man.

(Earth 2 #7) - The world buzzed with news reports about the New Wonders. Alan Scott woke up furious and depressed because of Sam’s death, and trashed his penthouse apartment. Hawkgirl tracked him down, saying it wasn’t hard to figure out his secret identity because she was skilled at solving mysteries. She again tried to convince Alan to join her and Flash, but Alan insisted he handled business by himself. Hawkgirl shot an arrow at him to show him his vulnerability, and it whizzed by his head, striking a photo of him and Sam. Alan was incensed, but when he turned around Hawkgirl was already gone.

(Earth 2 #10, 12) - Alan Scott met with Mr. Zhao and visited Sam’s grave in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Mr. Zhao admitted he never approved of Sam’s relationship with Alan, but had to admit that Alan made him happier than he’d ever seen. They both mourned Sam, and Alan admitted he feared he was the target of the train bombing that killed Sam. Mr. Zhao said he’d done his own research and learned that Sam was the target, but didn’t know who ordered the hit. Alan changed into Green Lantern and ripped through Wuxi’s underworld, but no one knew who wanted Sam dead. Green Lantern tracked down Hawkgirl, and admitted that when he said he didn’t need her help he was wrong. Hawkgirl showed off her investigative skills, and learned from mob boss Eddie Kai Lung that they’d find clues about Sam Zhao’s murder in a boatyard in Macau. Hawkgirl and Green Lantern opened a shipping container filled with dead Parademons, and were puzzled as to why they were there and what they could have to do with Zhao’s murder. The Green told Green Lantern he was needed in America, and he flew off over Hawkgirl’s objections. While new Wonder Dr. Fate engaged in a sorcerer’s duel with Wotan Green Lantern and Flash held the World Army at bay. Dr. Fate defeated Wotan, and whisked the Wonders away from the World Army. Green Lantern revealed his identity to Dr. Fate, Flash and his mother. He brought them to Global Broadcasting Company hq, and said his plan was to use his media empire to make people think favorably of the New Wonders, hoping that would make the World Army back off. Dr. Fate suddenly had a premonition and told Green Lantern to turn on the television. Ever since Steppenwolf took over the country of Dherain and installed himself as leader he began a massive buildup of the military. The World Army could no longer ignore Steppenwolf’s aggressive intentions and declared war on Dherain.
