History: (Demon II #3 (fb, BTS)) - Harry Matthews was a successful vice-president of an advertising firm, known for his dependability and fun guy nature. He met Jason Blood at a party and they bonded over their love of expensive cigars.
(Demon I #1, 2) - Harry attended a party at Jason Blood s Gotham apartment and tried to impress his date by dressing up as Cyrano using Blood s collection of antiquities. The party ended when Merlin sent an Unliving to summon Jason away from Gotham. Harry and Jason s mutual friend Randu Singh sensed he was in trouble, and Singh used his ESP to activate Jason s mystic powers, turning him into the Demon and allowing him to defeat Merlin s enemy Morgaine Le Fay.
(Demon I #3) - The Reincarnators cult, who could summon the past lives of others, was being investigated by the U.N., and as one of the investigators Randu Singh had been targeted for death. The Reincarnators turned Harry Matthews into his past self as the pirate Pistol, but Randu used his ESP to turn Jason Blood into the Demon and subdue him. The cult next sent medieval executioner Mord after Randu, but Etrigan stopped him and followed the Reincarnators back to their headquarters. The Demon destroyed the Master-Eye, source of the Reincarnators power, and when the Reincarnators leader tried to bring out a past life he was transformedinto a bug, which Etrigan squashed.
(Demon I #4, 5) - Randu explained Jason s demonic alter ego to Harry and hoped he would still be accepting of his friend. The Demon was tracking Kamara, a fearmonster, and the beast burst into Jason s apartment. Harry and Randu tried to fend it off, but it absconded with the Demon. Randu used his ESP to monitor the Demon s battle against Kamara s master the Iron Duke.
(Demon I #7) - Harry dropped by Jason s apartment to find that he had a new roommate, Klarion the Witchboy, who'd fled the Beyond Country when his elders condemned him. His elders caught up with him, and Harry was helpless to do anything, but Jason, as the Demon, banished them with a hex-sign. Klarion mistakenly believed that the Demon was now his servant. The Demon shattered his illusion by transporting him off the Earthly plane.
(Demon I #8-10) - Demon was interested in Jason s life and had his friends Harry and Randu show him Jason s collection of occult artifacts. They noticed a break-in, and the Demon felkt possessive of Jason s valuables, so he followed a hole in the apartment to Gotham s sewer system. The Phantom of the Sewers had stolen a sword that belonged to Merlin in a vain attempt to bring his beloved statue of \Galatea to life. The Demon fended him off and reclaimed the sword. Jason later threw a costume party, and Harry came dressed as a knight, showing his aspirations of heroism, but the Phantom broke in and kidnapped Glenda Mark, who he believed was Galatea. The police searched the sewers for Glenda, but Jason demanded that Harry and Randu aid him in his own search. They split up, and Etrigan dealt with the Phantom while Randu and Harry uncovered the Phantom s lair. The spirit of the Phantom s former lover Galatea possessed her own statue, and in an act of rage against the Phantom she uncovered a bomb in the Phantom s lair and blew it sky-high. Randu and Harry barely escaped with their lives.
(Demon I #11-13) - Randu and Harry visited Glenda in the hospital, and Randu was disturbed that he lost his E.S.P. connection with Jason Blood. They went to the Institute of Parapsychology and consulted Prof. Alan Hunter, who introduced them to his promising student Janie Wlles. She d made mental contact with Evilstein s monster, who d been tortured by his creator, but had escaped with the help of Etrigan. They found the monster, with Evilstein in pursuit, and he killed his creation with his Electric Lash. Etrigan retaliated by turning Evilstein into a vulture with the philosopher s stone.
(Demon I #14) - Klarion, seeking revenge for his banishment created a demonic duplicate of Jason / Etrigan. As long as the doppelganger lived Jason would slowly fade out of existence. He changed into the Demon and prevented the doppelganger from killing his friends Randu, Harry and Glenda, but his heroics took too long to accomplish and the Demon became an insubstantial spirit. Glenda wished him back with the philosopher s stone, and he vanquished Klarion and the doppelganger.
(Demon II #3) - Jason contacted Harry, telling him he was looking for a way to free himself from Etrigan with the help of Glenda, but she'd been kidnapped by Etrigan's father Belial. Harry agreed to help summon Belial, renting a large warehouse and obtaining crates of pigeons as a sacrifice to the demon. Belial appeared for Jason and returned Glenda, but in return he took Harry to Hell, where he skinned him and made him into a seat cushion.
(Demon III #4-6) - Jason and Etrigan were stranded in Hell after succeeding in stopping Asteroth from usurping control of Hell. Etrigan prodded Jason's mind, leading him to Belial's cave where he sat on a mountain of corpses and had tortured souls hanging from meathooks. Belial asked where Etrigan was, and when Jason, who was amnesiatic, replied that he didn't know what the demon was talking about Belial knew Etrigan was having his fun playing with Jason's mind. He waded off into a river of blood and told Jason to think on it. Jason found Harry Matthews, who Belial was still using as a cushion, and Harry tried to jog his memory, hoping he'd find a way to get them both out of Hell. More memories started coming back, but Etrigan wasn't ready for Jason to remember everything, so he put him to sleep. Etrigan emerged, and met up with his father. They agreed to partner up to take down Lucifer and Beelzebub so they could be sole rulers of Hell. Etrigan's mother Ran Va Daath assembled the exiled demons of Masak Madvil, and Etrigan rallied them to his side, telling them he'd grant them release from the abyss if they fought at his side. Etrigan returned to Jason as he woke, and after Harry told him more of his own history he regained the rest of his memory, including being at the Crusade that sacked Jerusalem and on the Santa Maria with Christopher Columbus. Realizing he was tied to Etrigan he felt helpless, but Harry reminded him it was his fault he was a seat cushion in Hell, and Jason agreed to take him to find Merlin so they could escape Hell together. They overheard Belial discussing his plans to lay back while Etrigan battled Lucifer and Beelzebub to see which way the winds blew. They sought out Merlin's sanctuary and told him about Etrigan's plans. Merlin told Jason he'd help him return to Earth, but first they had to stop Etrigan. Jason started to nod off and Etrigan was gleeful that Merlin foolishly allowed him into his sanctuary. Merlin made a concoction to keep Jason awake, but Etrigan commanded Jason to throw it down and drink a demon's bre Ran va Daath made him to put him to sleep. Etrigan gleefully scorched Merlin with hellfire and beat him to a pulp, but told Harry he wouldn't hurt him because he found his jokes hilarious. Etrigan conquered Beelzebub's domain, and Lucifer handed him the city of Dis and control of Hell, curious as to what he'd do with it.
(Demon III #7) - Etrigan prepared for his coronation at Masak Madvil, chaining up Beelzebub, Lucifer and Merlin, and placing Jason Blood and Harry Matthews on a slab of stone. He was given the Crown of Horns, signifying his rule. He promised his subjects Hell would shatter Earth and then lay siege to Heaven. Belial said he was proud of his son for joining him in the triumvirate, but Etrigan corrected him, saying he'd promised the third slot to Abaddon, knowing that if Lucifer had fought back Belial would have fought to keep the status quo. Etrigan also never got over his father allowing Merlin mastery over him. He assaulted his father, forced him to yield, and then ripped out his heart. Etrigan then ripped off Beelzebub's wings and cast him into the pit of Hell, then threw his father in too. Lucifer refused to throw himself into the pit, saying he was severely disappointed in Etrigan. His end goal of making war with Heaven was a fool's errand, and he'd expected better, but knew Etrigan was a youth as far as immortals went, and lacked true wisdom. Etrigan tried to attack him, but Lucifer broke his shackles and glided off. The chefs of Hell presented Etrigan with his feast, Caligula, who'd been stuffed for 2,000 years with the blood of sinners, but Etrigan told them he had one more pressing manner to attend to. He tortured Merlin, demanding he break his connection to Blood. Merlin seemingly agreed and cast a spell. Etrigan immediately started torturing Jason, but Merlin whispered to him that he was still Etrigan's jailer. Jason grabbed the Crown of Horns from Etrigan and used its' magic to incapacitate him before speaking the words that retuned Etrigan to him. Merlin's spell took effect, sending Jason back to Earth, and he was pleased at still being a skilled deceiver. Right before he vanished from Hell Jason managed to grab Harry to take him home.
(Demon III #8) - While Jason was in Hell the GCPD investigated his disappearance, and D.A. Richard Jaynes concluded he'd been murdered and charged Randu and Glenda. Klarion had escaped Beyond Region, and feeling he owed Glenda and Randu something, kept Jaynes and his wife prisoner while he posed as the D.A. and tried to tank the trial. When Jason returned from Hell he burst into the courtroom, proving he was alive and bringing an end to the prosecutor's case. Randu and Glenda were overjoyed to see their friend back from Hell, but he broke off his friendship with them, and told them never to contact them again. Batman was suspicious of Jason's return, and when he visited the D.A.'s house found him and his wife dead, suspecting Etrigan, not realizing Klarion was the culprit. He met with Jason, who felt kinship with Batman because they were both driven by demons, and proclaimed his innocence, saying he was still keeping Etrigan locked up inside him. Jason told Batman he'd realized Etrigan was not only ruining his own life, but the lives of everyone around him, and wanted to leave Gotham with Harry in tow and make a clean break.
(Demon III #9) - Tenzin Wyatt, who'd been left in a catatonic state by Etrigan, created a raging demon tulpa to destroy the demon. Harry Matthews was in Jason's apartment while he traveled to the Far East to seek the wisdom to control the demon within him, and Harry used his tongue to operate the TV and a straw to sip from a keg, but bemoaned the fact that the world wasn't accommodating to a seat cushion. The tulpa burst into the apartment and demanded Etrigan. Harry didn't know where he was, so the tulpa turned on him. Etrigan seemingly appeared and let himself be destroyed by the tulpa, ending Wyatt's wrath and its' existence. Klarion then visited, telling Harry he'd escaped the Beyond Region and created the illusion of Etrigan to get the tulpa to go away. He promised Harry he'd turned over a new leaf, and although he still had hated for Jason he said he could do some good with Harry's help.
(Demon III #10-12) - Harry, completely drunk, and Klarion watched news reports about widespread death and destruction worldwide, including a rebel massacre in Liberia. Chief Dan Oraibi, a Hopi, was interviewed, and prophesized the end times were coming unless humanity changed its' ways. Harry wanted to watch a gameshow, and Klarion was mystified that he didn't see something truly terrible was going on in the world. Harry responded that the world had always been a mess, and yet humanity managed to muddled through. Klarion pressed Harry on getting revenge on Etrigan, and Harry balked that although he hated the Demon he couldn't allow to see Jason hurt. Klarion promised him Jason would be unharmed, although he had his fingers crossed behind his back, and said to deal with Etrigan's power he'd need to form a gang. Klarion started recruiting for his gang, tying up a doctor at Arkham Asylum, stealing his clothes, and demanding a nurse take him to Tenzin Wyatt. His ruse didn't work, because he was clearly a child in adult clothing, so he cast a spell on the nurse, turning her feral and creating a distraction so he could enter Wyatt's cell. Wyatt was still catatonic, and Klarion found he couldn't enter his mind, which was still a hellish landscape, so he created an illusory Etrigan, enraging Wyatt, who produced his rage tulpa. The tulpa crashed through a wall chasing the illusion, and engaged in a brawl with Arkham resident Killer Croc, allowing Klarion time to put Wyatt in a wheelchair and wheel him out of the asylum. Klarion brought Teekl and a severely hungover Harry to a Gotham river, where he used a scrying crystal he found in Jason's apartment to locate and raise up Etrigan's foe C'th. Klarion took his gang to the Jolly Roger bar in Gotham, and took a femur from the bar's namesake decoration, imbued it with magic, and offered it to C'th as a new rod of power. C'th was underwhelmed, saying it would serve, but that a true rod of power was soaked in the blood of a hundred virgins. He related his history, from being worshipped as a god in ancient Babylon to how he ended up in the waters of Gotham, complaining all the while about his new lowly station in life. Klarion told his gang it was time to put his plan into motion, and had Harry call Glenda Mark.
(Demon III #13-15) - When Harry and Klarion's gang arrived at Glenda's apartment Klarion immediately showed his true colors, having Teekl threaten Glenda, and pressing Randu to use his psi powers to locate Etrigan. Randu's visions revealed that Jason had gone to the far East to find peace with the Order of the Green Dragon, but they used him as a pawn to summon the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo to Earth to destroy the planet and fulfill their cult's prophecy. Etrigan teamed with Lobo to procure an atomic bomb, so Klarion and company drove to Gotham's Woodside Military Base. Klarion hypnotized Major General Whitehead, who was pleased to show his "nephew" where the nukes were stored, and when Etrigan and Lobo arrived Klarion's gang attacked. Etrigan let Lobo take Klarion's gang on by himself while he rushed to the base's missile silo. Angered at being betrayed Etrigan told Klarion's group where Etrigan went while he went to find his own nuke on the base. Klarion's familiar Teekl followed Lobo to see what he was up to, and after transforming into her cat-lady form did a dance to bring him close so she could try to disembowel him. Lobo overpowered her, slamming her into a wall and leaving her in a heap before going back to his mission. Klarion and C'th focused their mystic power on Etrigan, staggering him, before Klarion cast a spell to turn him back into Jason Blood and stringing him up with cables. C'th demanded he be allowed to take Glenda as his sacrifice since he'd helped Klarion and the With-Boy told him to have fun. Lobo found his nuke, and the Phantom Stranger appeared to him, trying to appeal to his better nature to rethink what he was doing, but Lobo laughed him off. C'th grabbed Glenda, and prepared to kill her, but Lobo spotted them, and still angry at C'th attacking him unprovoked struck him, shoved his head in a tank cannon and fired it, blasting his head clean off. Glenda, with Randu and Harry following close behind, ran to the missile silo where she found Klarion torturing Jason with dark magic, and bashed him in the head with a nearby metal bar. She embraced Jason's broken and bloody form, and hoped he still lived. Glenda found that Jason was clinging to life, but just barely, and seeing no other choice she said the words that turned him back into Etrigan. Etrigan taunted her for her choice and teleported away to kill Lobo for his double-cross and end life on Earth by himself. Klarion, recovered from his head injury, snuck away while the Phantom Stranger appeared to Glenda, Randu and Harry to explain the predicament they were in. Every 13,000 years, halfway through the Great Tropical Year of Earth's orbit the planet entered an area of space that vibrated at a higher frequency, and at that time the chances of cataclysm were great. The Bible and the ancient records of China, Egypt and Babylon all recognized that every 13,000 years the world could undergo catastrophic change, and at that moment Lobo was set to detonate his nuke in the fault line of Megiddo, Israel, which would unleash an earthquake that would knock Earth from its' orbit. Klarion reunited with Teekl, overjoyed that she was alive but furious with Lobo for having harmed her, and when he came across C'th's corpse he took his rod of power and charged it up to cast a spell on Etrigan and Lobo. Etrigan and Lobo were having a fierce battle on Lobo's bike above Israel, and during their combat the nuke came loose and plunged toward Megiddo. Phantom Stranger sensed all these events and had Harry use the minor magic he'd learned during his time in Hell to combine with Klarion's spell, sending Etrigan and the falling bomb off to the Beyond Region. Harry, Randu and Glenda celebrated the world not ending, but Phantom Stranger had to break it to Glenda that Jason and Etrigan were either destroyed or severely altered by the spell.
(Demon III #23) - Jason told both Randu and Harry that he and Etrigan had agreed to put aside their differences, and were working together to find a way to separate from each other. Harry told Jason not to put too much faith in Etrigan playing fair, and asked Jason if he and Etrigan could work on getting his soul back from Hell. Jason also admitted that he hadn’t gone to see Glenda yet, and Harry told him she’d gotten a new job jewelry store. Jason heard howling in the night, and recognized the cry of his old foe the Howler, so he transformed into Etrigan to investigate.
(Demon III #26, 27) - Jason took Glenda and Harry out to the carnival, and while Glenda enjoyed herself, Harry was worried that good times with Jason never lasted, so he saw their time together as the calm before the storm. Wealthy conservative Darrin W. Dingle III thought the country had gone to Hell ever since Roosevelt’s New Deal, and wanted to find the perfect far right candidate for president. He employed political pollster Phil Harrity, who used Dingle’s list of traits of the ideal conservative to create a computer algorithm. Harrity ran the program three times on Dingle’s hi-tech computers, which inadvertently cast a conjuration spell that summoned Etrigan. Harrity fainted when he saw the demon, and Etrigan was peeved at being called forth like a minor demon, so he attacked Dingle’s security staff, and hopped a flight from Dingle’s mansion in Washington, DC back to Gotham. The next morning he had breakfast with Harry, Randu and Glenda. Glenda was very concerned about Jason’s abrupt disappearance, but Jason assured her he wasn’t running away from her again, and they kissed. Harry reminded Jason that he’d promised to get his soul back from Hell, and Jason promised to make it a priority to help his friend. At Dingle’s request Harrity ran his algorithm again, bringing Jason Blood back to DC. Jason transformed into Etrigan and after tearing through Dingle’s security once more threatened to push the wheelchair bound man down a flight of stairs until Dingle convinced him to listen to his proposition. He told Etrigan he wanted him to run for president, and the demon asked what was in it for him. When Etrigan learned that as Commander-In-Chief he’d have authority over the U.S. army and the country’s stockpile of nuclear weapons his interest was suddenly piqued. Etrigan fantasized about invading Hell and nuking it into a smoldering crater. He told Dingle he was his man, and would gladly run for president. To announce Etrigan’s entry into the Republican Party presidential primaries he put out a book entitled America Rules!, which also spelled out his platform of creating more jobs for the military-industrial complex and starting more wars against America’s enemies. Etrigan’s bellicose message resonated with Republicans, and he polled well. Jason, posing as one of Etrigan’s entourage, joined Glenda, Harry and Randu on the campaign trail. Glenda disliked the idea of Etrigan in office, but Jason said Etrigan didn’t have a chance of winning, and was happy to keep the demon occupied. Jason met Etrigan’s speech writer Patty Nonage, who Harry Matthews instantly developed a crush on after she accidentally sat on him. Etrigan was interviewed by Sam Donaldson, who told him his plans to make the world pay for America’s overinflated lifestyle were simplistic, and Etrigan responded by lightly roasting him with hellfire. Etrigan’s advisors told him he had to keep his temper, and the demon responded that he had because Donaldson was still alive. The Donaldson interview caused Etrigan to shoot up in the polls, and his advisor Ted Barton suggested he crash a debate between Presidential candidates Pat Buchanan and David Duke. Etrigan and his entourage arrived at the debate, and the demon pushed his way past police security, saying they couldn’t stand in the way of democracy. Etrigan was confronted by a large group of David Duke’s supporters, all neo-nazis and klansman, and ran roughshod over them. Etrigan stormed the stage, put Duke and Buchanan in painful wrestling holds, and made them say their policies were stupid. Etrigan pulled past Buchanan in the polls, and Glenda reiterated her concerns to Jason, who told her there was no way Etrigan could be President, because he wasn’t even a citizen. He turned into the demon, and Nonage secretly witnessed his transformation. An assassin shot Etrigan in the head during a rally, and this minorly annoyed Etrigan, who caught up to the assassin and threatened to torture and kill him. Superman intervened, saying that although he usually kept out of politics he couldn’t let Etrigan do that.
(Demon III #28, 29) - Etrigan momentarily blinded Superman with hellfire, and took the would-be assassin to a church belfry, asking him why he’d shot him. The man was religiously faithful, and thought he had a chance to kill Lucifer, which made Etrigan laugh. The man said other Christians would surely come after him, causing Etrigan to worry the religious right wouldn’t vote for him. Superman caught up with them, and Etrigan said he would spare the man’s life if Superman endorsed him. Superman flat out refused, saying he never took sides in elections because it was inappropriate, and further said that Etrigan was the worst candidate he’d ever seen. Superman beat Etrigan, and told him once the voting public saw him for what he was they’d defeat him as easily. Etrigan resolved to have Superman killed if he was elected President, and his PR team claimed Superman was Etrigan’s close friend and advisor. President Bush finally took notice of Etrigan, saying that he couldn’t be President because he wasn’t a U.S. citizen, and Etrigan fired back, saying that even though he was born in Hell, it was a part of Hell underneath the United States. Clark Kent wrote a series of devastating articles on Etrigan that eroded his base’s support, and Jason ran the numbers, and realized Etrigan had no chance of winning. He told Glenda, Randu and Harry that he was afraid Etrigan still had some trick up his sleeve. Patty Nonage met with Jason, revealing that she knew he was the demon. She wanted influence over him, and lusted for power, so she tried to seduce him, but Jason rebuffed her. Jason told her he needed some insurance in case Etrigan won, and handed her the spell that could transform Etrigan back into mortal form. He told Nonage that if she valued the power of the people over her own interest in power they’d all be safe. Etrigan met with Reverend Tartuffe, head of the Church of the Televangelical Voice, and got him to give the demon a baptism live on air and his endorsement in exchange for future favors once he was in office. Lois Lane told Clark Kent the news of Etrigan receiving the church’s backing, and he changed into Superman, deciding his articles hadn’t been enough to bring the demon down. Etrigan had a daydream about making America into a military power that would conquer the world, and then storming Hell and nuking Heaven. Superman gave a highly publicized speech, denying he had any affiliation with Etrigan, denouncing his warlike ambitions, and telling the American people that he could save them from supervillains, but only they could save themselves from Etrigan. Dingle and his think tank met with Etrigan to discuss his prospects, since he no longer had a chance at the Presidential nomination. Dingle rejected his team’s ideas of running as an independant or throwing in with the Democrats. Dingle had connections to the White House, and Bush was offering to dump Dan Quayle and offer Etrigan the vice-presidency if he threw his support behind Bush at the Republican Convention. Etrigan approved, making a veiled threat that he’d end up being President anyway after Bush died. Etrigan overheard Glenda, Randu and Harry making a plan to turn him back into Jason and keeping him from turning back until the National Convention was over, so he gagged and tied them up. At the convention a riot broke out between Etrigan and Bush’s supporters, and Etrigan met with Patty Nonage, telling her that if she stuck by him the rewards for her would be great. She asked Etrigan about his plans for the Presidency, and he said he’d always spoke the truth about burning the country to the ground, convincing Nonage to speak the spell that turned him back into Blood. Dingle nearly had a stroke when Nonage conceded the nominations Etrigan had gotten to Bush. Bush / Quayle won the Republican nomination, and weeks later Etrigan met with Nonage, telling her he admired her for her backstabbing ways. Later Etrigan visited Superman, telling him he intended to run again in four years.
(Demon III #30) - Jason sent Harry and Randu to a Gotham vs. Detroit ballgame, and revealed to Glenda that he didn’t want to get Harry’s hopes up, but he’d found a way to possibly get his soul back. Glenda and Jason pored over grimores, and were soon exhausted. Glenda kissed Jason, and he admitted he felt awkward because he’d hidden his feeling for her for so long. They allowed themselves to enjoy what they currently had, and slept together. At the ballgame Harry complained nonstop about how expensive things were in comparison to the ‘70s, and after getting into a heated argument with a Detroit fan he and Randu were kicked out. Randu said he’d never live it down if the U.N. heard about the incident. They returned home early, but immediately left when they saw they were interrupting something. Etrigan was happy to let Jason have a momentary joy, but to shake things up he pricked a hole in the condom Jason used.
(Demon III #31, 33) - Jason and Glenda spent two days making love, and when they remembered to attend to Harry he complained that he was out of booze and cigars. Jason told him he was working on getting his soul back, but he’d need help from outside Earth. Jason created a small magical dragon, and sent it into space with a note intended for Lobo, challenging him to fight Etrigan. Jason drove Glenda to her apartment, and she said she was worried about Harry drowning himself in drink, and Jason warned that the longer Harry was without a soul the more dissolute he’d become. Jason turned into Etrigan, and went to retrieve the Eternity Book from Beckermann’s Rare Books, now Beckermann Inc. Since Abner Beckermann had experienced unprecedented personal and financial success after his deal with Etrigan. Abner was not pleased with seeing Etrigan, and said his deal was with his brother Aldo, but Etrigan retorted that with his brother’s death the duty of fulfilling the agreement fell on him. Abner said he never had any use for the Eternity Book, and threw it in the trash. Etrigan threatened to roast his entrails, and he remembered that Adrian Grout, a janitor that worked for him for 20 years, disappeared after he threw out the book, and suggested that Grout might have it. Etrigan left him, and undid the magic that made him so successful, so within minutes Beckermann’s family was in a serious accident and he lost all his wealth. Etrigan went to visit Adrian’s apartment, and learned that he’d made good use of the eternity Book, turning his apartment into a palace, and creating magic duplicates of Wonder Woman to serve him. After a short battle Etrigan filled Grout with eldritch energy, causing him to explode. Asteroth, who was starting a criminal empire in Gotham, was drawn to the fight, and spotted the Eternity Book. He grabbed it, and, taking advantage of Etrigan’s weakened state, blasted him with magic bolts and spilled corrosive chemicals from a nearby tanker truck on him. Lobo arrived on Earth, looking to fight the demon, and attacked Asteroth, not wanting anyone to take his kill away from him. They fought fiercely until Etrigan recovered and ignited the tanker truck’s chemicals, causing a huge explosion. Asteroth limped away and Etrigan retrieved the Eternity Book. Etrigan reluctantly thanked Lobo, who said he wanted the pleasure of killing the demon himself. Etrigan tried to explain that he’d lured Lobo to Earth because he needed his help, but Lobo refused to listen and attacked. They fought into the Gotham subway system, and after being shocked on the third rail and run over by a subway car they were both momentarily stunned. Lobo admitted he always got a kick out of fighting Etrigan, and let him explain his offer to accompany him into Hell to save Harry Matthews soul. Etrigan promised battles aplenty and the chance to help kill Etrigan’s father Belial. The idea of patricide sealed the deal for Lobo, and he told the demon he was in. Etrigan introduced Lobo to Harry, Randu and Glenda. Lobo insulted them and forcibly grabbed Glenda, prompting Harry to promise that after he got his soul back he was going to kick Etrigan’s butt. Glenda asked Etrigan if she could say goodbye to Jason Blood before he left for Hell, and Etrigan refused, instead forcing a kiss on her. Etrigan took Lobo and Harry on a ride in his hellish hotrod, and opened a gate to Hell, driving through.
(Demon III #34, 35) - Etrigan and company arrived in Hell at Castle Cuur , the new residence of Morax, who asked Etrigan if he was back to rule Hell. Etrigan said ruling wasn’t what interested him anymore, and told Morax about his quest to save Harry’s soul. Etrigan commented that things seemed different in Hell, and Morax related how Lucifer abdicated, leaving Hell, and demons everywhere started bloody wars in an effort to grab power. Belial, vastly weakened without his heart, confined himself to his most secret sanctum. Morax offered to join them, though he was suspicious that Etrigan didn’t have other motives for returning to Hell, and took Lurgo aside, telling him to have Morax’s Torment Squads shadow them. They needed to cross the River Styx, and Charon objected to transporting their hotrod. Etrigan threatened him, but Charon was unimpressed, saying that he was immune to the Hell-Born, and none could keep him from his allotted task. Lobo started hitting him with his hook chain, to which Charon was not immune, and he agreed to take them and their transport across Styx. When Charon let them off he cursed them, telling them to never come back, and Lobo, not appreciating his attitude, tossed a frag grenade at him. They were beset by the demon Hyperaktiv and his cannibal brothers, but Lobo, Morax and Etrigan slaughtered them with relish, while Harry cheered from the sidelines, getting a vicarious thrill from the combat. Etrigan’s hotrod ran low on fuel, so the group stopped at a reststop, where Etrigan grabbed the attendant and shoved him in the fuel tank, saying that his car ran on souls. They arrived at Belial’s secret sanctum and demanded to be let in. Etrigan wanted to know why his father was so down in the dumps, and Belial reminded his son that he’d ripped his heart out. Belial hardly even had an appetite for evil anymore. Ran va Daath had the heart, but it was stolen and being kept in the Impenetrable Fortress of Flynn. Belial introduced Etrigan’s group to MacAwfully Cutekin, who he claimed was his nephew, a proto-demon who’d been the one to locate his heart. Cutekin was actually Merlin in disguise, having previously made a deal with Belial so he could destroy his half-brother. Etrigan asked for Harry’s soul back, and Belial led them to his soul room, where the billions of souls he’d collected over the eons were watched over by Ca’rrion, keeper of souls. Belial uncorked Harry’s soul, allowing Harry to see it was safe and sound before putting it back in the bottle. Belial said he’d give them Harry’s soul if they retrieved his heart, and Etrigan agreed. While they talked Lobo and Morax ganged up on MacAwfully Cutekin, pulling him aside and dismembering him with hook and mallet because they despised his cloying cuteness. Belial asked Etrigan why he was helping a mortal, and his son said he was trying to be the good guy of Hell. Belial was disgusted with the thought, and said he hoped it was just a phase. Belial sent Etrigan and his crew off, and told them he’d look after Harry, introducing him to Katarina de la Kush, another soul he’d turned into a pillow. They had an instant attraction, but were unable to start kissing because they were immobile. After they left Belial, not trusting Etrigan one bit, sent his Skull Squad to shadow his son. Belial discovered Cutekin’s remains and used his magic to reassemble him. Merlin dropped his disguise and, enraged at the abuse he’d suffered, vowed to kill Etrigan and all his friends.
(Demon III #38, 39) - Harry and Katarina, unable to physically express their newfound love sang a romantic duet. Etrigan and company returned from the Impenetrable Fortress with the Thing-That-Cannot-Die, who was the one who’d stolen Belial’s heart. The Thing got hungry and ate the heart, so Etrigan performed a spell from the Eternity Book to make a new one for Belial. Belial placed the new heart in his chest and grumbled about the loss of his old one, he said it was serviceable enough. Belial reunited Harry with his soul, but Harry remained a seat cushion, and Belial admitted he lied when he said having his soul back would revert Harry to normal. Harry fumed while Belial, Etrigan, Lobo and Morax all laughed at him. Etrigan revealed the real reason he’d agreed to save Harry’s soul. He’d found a spell in the Eternity Book that would let a prince of Hell rule as overlord for one day a year if he returned a human soul without asking for a reward. Etrigan completed the spell over Belial’s objections, but the magic was booby trapped, and once the spell was finished Etrigan found himself on fire, and was soon burned down to his bones. Merlin revealed himself and bragged that he’d put that spell in the Eternity Book as a trap for his hated half-brother. Merlin and Belial gloated about Etrigan’s death, infuriating the Thing because he liked Jason Blood. He scorched off Merlin’s beard with his flame breathe and engaged him in a brief magical duel before being stepped on by Belial. Morax and Lobo decided to finish what the Thing started and attacked. They were winning the battle when Etrigan appeared, revealing that he’d cast a spell earlier to create a magical duplicate, having a suspicion that the Eternity Book spell was cursed. Merlin looked around for his Eternity Book, but the Thing had devoured it. After brutalizing Belial and Merlin Etrigan ripped Belial’s heart out again, and placed Merlin inside his chest cavity. He then sealed the wound with hellfire and buried Belial in a deep grave. Etrigan took Harry and his new female pillow friend Katarina de la Kush and told Morax he was leaving Hell with Lobo. They rode to one of the gates exiting Hell, and Etrigan told Lobo he’d have to fight the gatekeeper, an enormous dog demon. Lobo was having a difficult time, so the Thing, having stowed away in Etrigan’s trunk, said he’d help finish the guardian if Etrigan took him out of Hell. Etrigan agreed, and because the Thing was cautious about trusting him, he cut his own hand and shook on a blood oath. The Thing helped Loibo, true to his word, but Etrigan broke his and left him behind. The Thing sobbed, being once again alone. Etrigan and Lobo unwound from their quest by downing beers at a Gotham City bar.
(Demon III #42-44) - Katarina told Harry that Jason seemed more pensive than usual, and Harry told her he was still trying to find a way to separate himself from Etrigan. The two pillows stopped worrying, and started making out. After Etrigan nearly died in a confrontation with Asteroth, who'd set himself up as a Gotham crimeboss angels Duma and Remiel offered the injured Demon a job as Hell's hitman to deal with the infernal beings that had been unleashed on Earth. He eagerly agreed, loving the idea of the carnage he could cause supported by the will of Heaven, and knowing the angels authority would keep Jason from interfering with him. Jason, seeing his chance of being free of Etrigan dashed, said his goodbyes to Harry, Rama and Glenda, taking solace in the fact that Etrigan agreed to let him do so and promised not to hurt them. Harry and Katarina moved in with Randu, but Katarina fell in love with Randu's couch leaving Harry dejected and alone. Etrigan visited Harry to taunt him when he discovered the Thing-That-Cannot-Die had hidden in his cloak and hitched a ride with him back from Hell. Over Harry's objections Demon shoved the Think into a microwave and cooked him for putting him in a bad mood, even though Thing protested that he only snuck back from Hell with Etrigan because he'd stranded him there in the first place.
(Demon III #49) - The Thing brought Harry his supply of whiskey and cigars, and Harry mocked Jason for spending hours staring out the window at the rain and brooding. Harry told Thing sarcasm was one of the few joys he had left, and once again told him about his breakup with Katarina de la Kush. PI Joseph D. Gunn followed Thing home from the liquor store and was spying on Jason's apartment. When Jason went down to his inner sanctum, Gunn pumped Harry for information about Jason, threatening to shoot him through the eyes if he didn't talk. Jason was using a scrying mirror to watch Glenda and Etrigan, preventing Etrigan from knowing he was being watched using masking wards. He knew Etrigan was up to something, and created a homunculus to go through a pentagram portal to Hell and follow him. Gunn burst in, demanding Jason use his magic to make him rich, and stepped on the pentagram, falling into Hell, and destroying the homunculus with an errant gunshot on the way. His curiosity made him spoy on Etrigan, who'd arrived at Baytor's castle. Lady Smega gave birth, although the strain killed her. Etrigan couldn't care less, and held up his monstrous newborn Golgotha. The sight of Golgotha drove Gunn mad, and when Jason retrieved him from Hell, he refused to say what he'd witnessed, ran home, and shot himself in the head.
(Demon III #51) - Harry, tired of Jason's moods, had himself shipped off to Glenda's apartment. They discussed the coming birth of her child, and she said she was hoping for a boy because they were less trouble. She reiterated that she wanted no further contact with Jason, and never wanted her child to have anything to do with him.
(Demon III #52-54) - Etrigan was ready to use Golgotha to make life Hell for Jason and Glenda. Blood knew Etrigan was up to something, and recruited Merlin and the Hitman to help Jason stop him. Harry returned home in time to see Blood release Etrigan, who greeted Harry, the Thing, Merlin and Hitman, claiming he meant them no harm, even if the wards in Jason's apartment weren't in place to protect them. Etrigan went to the hospital where Glenda had just given birth to her and Jason's daughter, ate the delivery doctor's arm, and kidnapped the babe, leaving Glenda furious and in tears. Etrigan placed a spell on the child to bind her soul to Golgotha. He turned back into Jason, who called Marlin and Hitman for help. The WWI soldiers Etrigan had killed were at the church, and were in the thrall of the Demon, seeking their pound of flesh from Blood. Hitman and Merlin held off the dead soldiers while Glenda checked herself out of the hospital, stole a GCPD officer's gun, and threatened Harry and the Thing until they revealed where Jason was. Glenda was ready to shoot Blood to put an end to Etrigan once and for all. Etrigan entered Merlin's mind, promising to restore his precious powers if he betrayed Jason, and Merlin agreed to follow his orders. He placed Glenda's daughter in a pentagram to summon Golgotha so he could be bound to her. He warned Jason not to remove her lest Golgotha be unfettered on Earth. Merlin tried to kill Hitman with a mystic blast for daring to threaten him, but his magic fizzled out, and he realized Etrigan had betrayed him. Hitman shot him through the head, and he vanished, because he'd long ago placed a spell on himself that would only be activated upon his death. With no regard for himself Jason removed the child from the pentagram and bonded his soul with Golgotha. Etrigan was forced to share Jason's mind and soul, but because there wasn't enough room Golgotha turned on his own father. Jason vomited blood and collapsed. Etrigan and Golgotha's battle raged from Jason's soul down into Hell and up to the gates of Heaven, with Golgotha having the clear advantage. Golgotha killed an angel, making Etrigan realize how powerful and unhinged his son was. They returned to Jason's soul, and once Golgotha was on the verge of killing his father Jason stepped in, offering to save Etrigan. Etrigan begged for his help, and Jason made him promise to stay away from Glenda and his child. To ensure the Demon kept his promise Jason took out his heart and hid it away. With Jason allowing him full control in his mind Etrigan roasted Golgotha with hellfire and clawed him into pieces. The dead soldiers closed in on Hitman, Glenda and her child, and Hitman considered using his gun to give them a quick death, but after Etrigan's submission to Jason they disappeared. Jason, now recovered, let Etrigan out after taunting him about how great it was to watch him beg. Etrigan fled into the night and Glenda had a feeling she'd never see him or Jason again. In a rage Etrigan tore Jason's apartment to the ground and left a note saying he'd find a way to get Jason back. Harry and the Thing survived the apartment's collapse, and Harry, tired of the chaos that surrounded Jason convinced the Thing to leave Gotham with him and go on a road trip to California.
(Blood of the Demon #10) - Jason’s death caused his protective spells on his Gotham apartment to crumble, and freed all manner of monsters. Randu Singh and Harry traveled to the year 1885 and split the Demon of that era into two entities, and took one into the future to undo the damage.
(Blood of the Demon #11, 12) - In the present day Demon, Randu and Harry found Jason Blood’s apartment burned to the ground, unable to sustain itself without Jason Blood’s magic. Demon decided to roam the city and enjoy the present day. After destroying a demon that possessed a drunk he attended one of Joshua and Ruth Simmon’s rallies. They spread a message of love, but turned the public against Jason Blood, saying his death was needed for peace. Demon sensed a great evil inside Ruth and grabbed h
(Blood of the Demon #13, 15) - Three months later the Old West Demon stopped Morgaine Le Fay from kidnapping Anjeli from the Gotham memorial hospital. Harry dealt with Morgain's demons with a tank of liquid oxygen, but one of the demons turned the LOX on Harry, freezing and shattering his left arm.
(Blood of the Demon #13-17) -The Old West Demon was captured and imprisoned by the Lord of the Damned. Randu and Harry found Jason s bones and reanimated him into a soulless being. They spent a year with the reanimated Demon searching for the Old West Demon. Harry was held captive by a cult living underneath a church in Venice and rescued by the Demon, who slaughtered the cultists. They went to Castle Branek and were greeted by Inspector Kurtzberg, and afterwards attacked by animated statues, and learned that Branek was one of Merlin s tombs. Merlin s spirit warned them that the reanimated Demon would soon be beyond Harry and Randu s control. Merlin removed the Demon side of the reanimated Jason, and sent them to the stronghold of the Lord of the Damned so they could finish their quest. They found the captive Demon, who killed the reanimated Jason and took his limbs to replace the ones the Lord had ripped off him. The Lord sent Demon and Harry to the gladiator arena to fight to the death. Harry had to say the spell to transform the Demon to save himself, but the spell turned the Lord into Jason Blood. Months ago the Demon and the Lord had actually switched minds and bodies. Harry mentally contacted Merlin, who brought back the reanimated Demon to fight the Lord s hordes. The reanimated Demon fought the Lord, who d been freed by Agonista, and when Old West Jason transformed back into the Lord s form he joined the fray. The Old West Demon killed the Lord, stabbing him through the heart. Since their minds and bodies were connected, the Lord's death caused the Demon to burn up. Castle Branek collapsed, and the Demon brought Harry to safety. The Demon was summoned to Gotham to battle Wishmongers, and after defeating them he wished for a return to normalcy. Harry forgot his recent magical adventures and returned to being a video director.
