HUNTRESS

Real Name: Helena Janice Bertinelli

Class: Human technology-user

Occupation: Vigilante

Group Affiliation: formerly Justice League America, JLA, Outsiders III, Birds of Prey

Known Relatives: Carmela Bertinelli (mother, deceased), Guido Bertinelli (father, deceased), Freddy Caldone (cousin, dceeased)

Aliases: Batgirl

Base of Operations: Gotham City, formerly New York City, NY

First Appearance: All-Star Comics I #69 (January, 1978)

Powers: Huntress was skilled in gymnastics and the martial arts, and was an excellent markswoman, no matter what weapon she used. She was armed with a bullwhip, crossbow, throwing knives and darts. Huntress used a cord to swing between buildings in the urban landscapes she patrolled. Huntress was also a master of disguise.

History: Helena was the daughter of Guido Berinelli, a top mafia crime boss. As a child she was held for ransom by a rival boss who wanted Guido to accede to his demands. This traumatic event changed her personality from optimistic and friendly to somber and cynical. She started resenting the source of her father's wealth. During her college years she attended a family reunion and watched them all slaughtered by underworld figure Omerta the Silencer. Helena only survived by playing dead.

Once her enemies learned of her survival, Helena was relentlessly hunted. Before his death her father had assigned her a bodyguard, and Sal taught her how to defend herself. She still felt helpless, so she adopted the identity of Huntress to turn the tables on the Mafioso hunting her. She avenged her family's death, and rededicated her life to wiping out crime.

(Showcase '93 #9, 10) - Huntress was on patrol when she saw children mugging a woman, and thought Gotham was irredeemably going to Hell. She delivered a beatdown to the muggers, and the next day returned to her job as teacher at Whitman High School. Her student David Stone had a black eye, and admitted his father hit him. She called his mother, who defended Walker Stone for disciplining his son, and Helen filled with rage. She changed into Huntress and stalked Walker, learning that he was an insane survivalist with a C.I.A. background. She watched him buy armaments for a survivalist camp before shooting his dealer. Huntress intervened, and they fought, but he escaped, telling her he had a good idea that his son, who he despised for being weak, was the one who put Huntress on his trail. Huntress rushed to the Stone residence, but arrived after Walker had come and gone, and found David beaten to death. She promised that Walker would die by her hands. Huntress tracked him to his survivalist camp in Colorado, and was met there by the new Batman, ho demanded she stand down. She refused, and they teamed up to take out the survivalists, with Huntress breaking Walker's arm, but restraining herself from murder, and Batman using explosives to destroy the camp. Huntress told him his violent excess was the kind of thing the Batman she'd once worked with warned her about, and he told her Batman had changed. Back at school Helen told her classroom that they should think of David any time they were tempted to harm someone else.

(Green Lantern III #81) - Coast City; Huntress was among the heroes who attended a memorial service for Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

(Catwoman II #51, 52) - One of Bertinelli's students died of a drug overdose, and her class told her about a new drughouse that popped up in Gotham, and was in a neighborhood dangerous enough that the GCPD left it alone. As Huntress she came to bust it up, but Catwoman beat her too it. Catwoman was there to steal, but Huntress demanded the money. Catwoman protested until Huntress told her she wanted it for a drug rehab charity. Catwoman knew where the Cartagenas drug compound was, where they could score big money, but she never had the backup to tackle it until now. Huntress had no illusions that Catwoman was anything but a thief, and made it clear she didn't trust her, but agreed to the job anyway. They took out the guards, put the dogs to sleep, and made their way to the Cartegnas' safe. One dog was still awake and alerted Rafael Cartegna, aka Skullface, and his men, and Huntress and Catwoman blamed each other for the screw-up. A button-bomb from Catwoman gave the duo time to regain their composure and knock out the criminals. When they were ready to part ways Catwoman took her 10% cut, but Huntress changed her mind and said she wanted all the money for her charity, chasing Catwoman into a tree. Catwoman gave her the money, and told her to just ask nicely next time.

(Spectre III #62) - Corrigan decided to give up the mantle of the Spectre, at last seeking peace in death. Craemer arranged for his bones to be buried in a small grave, and performed a funeral service, with all of the friends Corrigan met as the Spectre attending, including Huntress. The Spectre-Force vanished and Jim ascended to Heaven.

(JLA #16, 17) - Huntress was invited to join the JLA as part of their new lineup. The JLA invited the press to the Watchtower to introduce the new team to the public, and had a “join the JLA for a day” contest that a man named Retro won. Retro was killed on his way to the Watchtower and replaced by Prometheus. Prometheus set fire to the hydroponic systems that provided the Watchtower with air, and defeated Martian Manhunter, Steel, Huntress and Batman as Hippolyta tried to evacuate the press. Prometheus threatened to kill the press unless Superman committed suicide, but Catwoman, who’d been disguised as reporter Cat Grant, defeated him and he was forced to flee. Prometheus had methods of defeating every hero on Earth, but didn’t keep files on villains, so the newly reformed Catwoman was capable of besting him.

(JLA #18, 19) - Julian September unhinged the universe’s laws of probability with his engine of chance, briefly warping history so that Huntress and several other JLA members blinked out of existence. Atom met with the JLA, and Oracle unlocked September’s research notes. He split seven photons to create the Engine of Chance, so Atom shrunk the team to subatomic height and repaired the photons, undoing all the Engine’s effects.

(Green Lantern III #103) - Huntress and the JLA were introduced to time-traveling Green Lantern Hal Jordan by Green Lantern Kyle Rayner. Hal was welcomed as a new inductee into the JLA.

(DC One Million #1-4, JLA #1,000,000) - Justice Legion A invited Huntress and the JLA to travel with them to the year 85,271 to compete in Olympic-style games and celebrate the return of Superman Prime to Earth. Huntress turned them down and told Batman she automatically suspected people she didn’t know enough about, and she didn’t like the idea of cosmic adventure and time travel. She asked Batman why he recommended her for the JLA when he didn’t approve of her methods, but he wouldn’t give her a straight answer. He secretly liked seeing her grow and change into a real hero. When Hourman sent the JLA to the 853rd Century he was unable to retrieve them, because he’d been implanted with a virus by Vandal Savage and Solaris. The virus spread across Earth, infecting machines and humans alike, turning them hostile. Zauriel asked Steel to create a time machine to retrieve the JLA. The Hourman Virus, which Starman helped bring to the past because he’d sided with Solaris, was actually a computer program looking for a system, Solaris itself. Using Epoch’s notes Steel, Huntress and the remaining members of the JLA constructed a time engine to find their timelost teammates. Justice Legion A arrived at the Watchtower, and the JLA battled the Legion, assuming they were under control of the Hourman virus, but the Legion explained they needed the time engine to power the Solaris computer they’d constructed, and the teams joined up to complete Solaris’ construction. The virus left Earth to create Solaris’ A.I. Starman regretted his betrayal of the Justice Legion when he met Ted Knight, the original Starman. To redeem himself he stopped the newly constructed Solaris from destroying Earth by opening up a black hole in its computer brain. Superman 1,000,000 punched through the time barrier to save the JLA, and Huntress came up with a plan to help them. In the 853rd century Solaris planned to use the Knight Fragment, the last surviving piece of kryptonite, to assassinate Superman Prime. Starman destroyed the kryptonite in the present and disguised a Green Lantern power ring as kryptonite. This foiled Solaris’ plan to kill Superman in the future, and the Justice Legion and JLA defeated Solaris.

(JLA #24-26) - Huntress and the JLA got a report of a alien invasion in Phoenix, Arizona, but when the team showed up in Arizona the invasion turned out to be a ruse. They were confronted by the Ultramarine Corps, who were under orders from General Wade Eiling to execute the JLA. The fight went badly for the JLA until Superman convinced the Ultramarines that Eiling had gone insane, and his orders no longer carried presidential approval. The JLA and Ultramarines fought Eiling, who had transferred his consciousness into the indestructible body of the Shaggy Man. Although they couldn’t defeat him, they transported the General millions of miles into uninhabited deep space.

(JLA #27) - Professor Ivo placed an upgraded Amazo in the Florida Everglades to free him from Belle Reve prison. Amazo instantly duplicated the powers of any active JLA member and defeated Huntress and the JLA, and when they called in the reserves, his power only increased as he duplicated the abilities of the reserves. Superman temporarily disbanded the JLA, causing Amazo to lose his powers and shut down.

(Batman #563) - Huntress took the identity of Batgirl to deal with the gangs in No Man's Land. Batman confronted her, but provisionally accepted her use of the iconic bat to break the gangs.

(Batman #564) - Huntress begged for Batman's help when Mikey, a former False Facer and one of Father Chris's congregation was shot by his old gang. Batman managed to transport Chris from the hospital and to the triage center set up by Dr. Leslie Thompkins. Huntress tied to make Father Chris banish Scarecrow from the congregation, but he held fast. Scarecrow learned that Chris had a weapons cache in the church, in his naive attempt to keep them off the streets, and informed the False Facers, who came to the congregation to claim the guns.

(Batman #565) - Black Mask and his cult rose to power in Gotham and Batman tasked Batgirl with keeping them from storming Wayne Tower.

(JLA #28-31) - The 5th Dimensional invasion began, with genie Lxz causing havoc around the world. Huntress and the JLA teamed up with the Justice Society of America, and tried to find J.J. Thunder, who was in possession of the 5-D genie Thunderbolt. Lkz tried to stop them by animating the buildings of Keystone City and killing citizens. The heroes fought him off the best they could, and Huntress felt out of her league, but kept going with prodding from Wildcat of the JSA. It came down to J.J., who, after some prodding, summoned the Thunderbolt, who began a titanic battle with Lkz. Qwsp revealed himself as the instigator of the battle between Lkz and Thunderbolt, a battle that threatened to throw the 5th Dimension into chaos and destroy Earth. Representatives of the 5th Dimension arrested Qwsp, because only mischief was allowed in the 3rd Dimension, and he’d gone way past that. Captain Marvel and Green Lantern convinced Thunderbolt and Lkz to merge into one being, ending their war.

(Martian Manhunter II #6-9) - Huntress and the JLA got a distress signal from Martian Manhunter’s hq Z’Onn Z’Orr and found the half-dead Jemm there. Jemm projected his thoughts, and he believed his attacker to be the Manhunter. The JLA found Martian tech in a desert terraforming it to resemble Mars, and a lab filled with gruesome genetic experiments. They also found Malefic, who was disguised as Martian Manhunter, and who was responsible for the abominations they’d seen. He fought the JLA and in the course of the battle Malefic’s Martian tech exploded. He’d succeeded in making the JLA think that Manhunter had gone rogue. The JLA later found Manhunter and asked him to surrender to them. The JLA questioned Manhunter at the JLA Watchtower, and Malefic turned himself invisible and attacked the JLA. They assumed Manhunter was responsible, leading to a huge fight. Manhunter tried to extricate himself by flying off in a JLA shuttle, but Malefic had anticipated this, and rigged it to go up in flames. Malefic then started hunting down the individual members of the JLA. Manhunter revealed that he’d survived and challenged his brother to a one-on-one confrontation on Z’Onn Z’Orr. Manhunter piloted Z’Orr into the sun and left Malefic behind to burn alive. The JLA apologized to Manhunter for ever having doubted him.

(JLA #32) - Huntress and the JLA discovered that Locus was conducting disturbing genetic experiments in No Man's Land Gotham City. The JLA waged war against Locus to force them out of Gotham.

(JLA #34) - Steel and Huntress dealt with a trespasser who was bypassing all of the JLA Watchtower’s security measures. The trespasser turned out to be Mr. Miracle, who warned them that Mageddon was approaching Earth.

(JLA #36-40) - Mr. Miracle called an emergency meeting of Huntress and the JLA and informed them of Mageddon’s arrival and explained its origins. It was a doomsday weapon of the Old Gods, and it would cause a massive outbreak of wars on Earth, the hatred it spread would keep going until everyone on the planet was dead. As the JLA formed a battle plan, the Watchtower was attacked by Lex Luthor and his New Injustice Gang, who set off a number of explosions that damaged the Watchtower. Luthor was under the influence of one of Mageddon’s remote senders, and tried to keep the JLA from interfering with the wars Mageddon caused on Earth. The fight went badly for the JLA, with Huntress being beaten down by Prometheus. The JLA defeated the Gang and freed Luthor fromMageddon’s control. Batman and Huntress pursued Prometheus into the Still Zone, and Huntress was prepared to kill him, so Batman made her stand down and kicked her off the JLA.

(JLA #58) - Huntress was among the number of heroes defeated by the White Martians invading Earth. The Martians were eventually driven off by the JLA.

(Superman / Batman #5) - President Luthor blamed Superman for the kryptonite asteroid heading towards Earth, and put out a warrant for his arrest. He prematurely announced the capture of Superman, and Batman, who was aiding him, leading members of the Superman and Batman Families, including Huntress, to raid the White House to rescue their friends. The Batman Family made it to the oval office, but Luthor knocked them out with nerve gas, but Batman and Superman broke into the White House and freed their friends.

(Outsiders III #8-10) - Huntress was recruited by Arsenal to join the Outsiders. Nightwing was very vocal in his disapproval of Huntress, saying she was too brutal for the team, and Huntress snapped back that she thought his anger was due to his attraction to her. Their bickering was interrupted when they had to interview the Tattooed Man, who recently sold arcane totems to Russian mobster Ishmael Gregor, who then used them in a blood sacrifice. Huntress and the Outsiders confronted Gregor, who had transformed into the demonic Sabbac, as he summoned the Soldiers of Dietec to Earth. With the help of Black Lightning and Captain Marvel, Jr. the Outsiders forced the Soldiers back to Hell and forced Sabbac to flee.

(JLA #117) - Former members of the Secret Society of Super-Villains who’d had their minds altered years ago by the JLA because they knew the secret identities of everone in the JLA had their memories restored by Despero. The JLA knew the villains were going to target their loved ones, so Flash checked in on Huntress and the Birds of Prey to make sure they were okay.
