History: Summer Day was born to police officer Bert Day, and he was disappointed he didn't have a son. Summer tried to win his approval by excelling in scholastics and athletics, but it was never enough for Bert. He expected even more form her when her sister Doreen was born, he wanted to make her into the son he never had. She didn't pass police academy, and her father's disappointment turned her neurosis into hatred. She volunteered for thePeace Corps, and went to Africa to escape her life. One day she found a native wounded by an arrow, and as she was treating him, he bit her. It turned out that the native was a were-hyena, who ended up being shot by another Corps member. Summer had inherited the curse, and knew that stress would transform her into the beast Hyena.

(Firestorm I #4, 5) - Hyena attacked gangster "Spit" Shine and his goons after they robbed a travel agency, making her hatred of criminals well known. Shine escaped, but when the police arrived Hyena, who also hated authority figures, mauled them. Hyena later interfered when Firestorm was battling more of Shine's goons, and he easily dispatched her. Firestorm prevailed and Shine's men brought her to the hq of Mother Shine and "Shoe" Shine. Hyena went berserk when she woke and escaped. She later met Multiplex, one of Firestorm's enemies, and they decided to team-up to destroy the hero.
