He retired early, feeling he was too old to win, and discovered the secrets of black magic. He cast a spell that would allow his soul to remain on Earth after death, and then sacrificed himself. He tried to possess an adult male, and in desperation a baby, but found that humans had many defenses against a foreign soul taking over their body. He settled on a bulldog, and rose in the fierce world of dog politics. He killed Clutterbuck, the owner of a junk yard, and forced his mentally disabled assistant Dougie to act as his human agent. Drummond began assembling a dog army to conquer the world, and had Dougie lure various alcoholics and homeless to the junk yard for his army to feast on. Drummond was pleased to learn that his magical power increased as he ate more humans, and he had Dougie start writing his autobiography. The police were baffled by the missing forgotten members of society, whose gnawed bones later turned up, but magician John Constantine took an interest, and figured out Drummond’s plot. John taunted Drummond, got him to chase him, and eventually got the drop on him with a wrench. Drummond the dog died, and wondered what he’d come back as next, but John told him he should call it quits. The dog army recognized John as their master, but John just told them to shoo. Drummond’s soul found a rat, a cunning vicious creature, and started his new life.
