History(Demon III #25 (fb)) -<1323> Knight Ryme captured a witch who’d been committing blasphemy by preaching her own religion to drive people away from the Christian church. Ryme, with a contingent of fellow knights and clergy, tied her to the stake and demanded she repent or she’d be burned to death. The witch refused, and Ryme set the light to the stake, at which point Dag-Raith, the demon possessing the witch, revealed himself. He cast a death-spell, killing Ryme’s compatriots and cursing Ryme with immortal life to forever regret persecuting him.

(Demon III #25) - Ryme spent centuries learning magic, and became a demon-slayer as revenge for Dag-Raith putting a curse on him. Now calling himself Judge Ryme, he found an abandoned church to live in in Gotham City and sensed the demon Etrigan’s presence in Gotham City. He shadowed Jason Blood, the mortal bonded to Etrigan, watching him buy groceries with Randu Singh, and decided to use Randu to gain an advantage over his target. Ryme followed Randu home and beat him, demanding he call Jason  Blood up. Randu refused to betray his friend until Ryme shot him in the arm. When Jason answered the call Ryme told him his friend’s life was in danger, and demanded Jason confront him as Etrigan. Jason transformed into Etrigan and battled Judge Ryme. Ryme was immune to Etrigan’s hellfire, and his magic crossbow could harm Etrigan, but they nonetheless fought to a standstill. Ryme’s mystic pistol leveled an apartment building, and Etrigan called him a sinner, showing him that he was now responsible for the death of dozens of people, including children. Ryme, ashamed of himself, fled, and Etrigan was happy to let him live so he could suffer from the guilt of his actions. Ryme returned to his shelter in the church and flagellated himself, promising God he’d continuing punishing himself until the Lord deemed he was once again worthy to hunt demons.
