History: (Dragonlance #5) - Kalthanan's father was a Dark Elf, and despite Katlthanan's exemplary behavior he was treated as an outcast by his fellow elves in Qualinost. One day Kalthan's father Thanakan sent him to Darken Wood to collect rare herbs, and when Kalthanan returned he found that his father had slaughtered their entire family. Kalthanan never learned why his father spared him, but he became a pariah, and was forced to leave Qualinost as though he was responsible for his father's actions. When war waged in Krynn Kalthanan made a living taming griffons so they could serve as steeds for the forces of good. After taming a particularly wild specimen Kalthanan saw the sky filled with humans riding silver dragons, the dragons of good. He was overjoyed at the prospect of the evil dragonarmies having met their match, and followed the riders towards the city of Palanthas. He was dismounted by the magic of the mage Raistlin, who seemed to know all of Kalthanan's dark thoughts, and used the elf's mind as a hiding place for his own darkest thought. Raistlin seemed to have forgotten what he'd done, and Kalthanan heard a voice in his head urging him to reach Palanthas. He saved a crowd from an out of control gnomish invention created by Gnatch the inventor, and Lord Amothius offered to reward him by dining with him. The other guest was Laurana, the daughter of the Speaker of Suns, and an elf Kalthanan remembered from Qualinost. She said the elves of his home were no longer so haughty and self-assured since Krynn went to war, and Kalthanan said he'd be honored to fight under her alongside the Knights of Solamnia. Suddenly he heard voices and began speaking in Raistlin's voice about how no one could keep his magic from its true master. He fought off a number of guards, stabbing one, and forced Gnatch to activate his misfiring war bladder to cause a distraction so he could steal a horse. Gnatch realized he'd made a mistake, so he grabbed a ride with Kalthanan out of town. He asked Kalthanan why his lord's men were after him, and Kalthanan said he had no idea.

(Dragonlance #6, 7) - Kalthanan was inexplicably drawn to Kalaman, a city run by the dragonarmies. Gnatch cobbled together a mechanical pogostick to speed their journey, but it was barely controllable. they came across slain soldiers, and were ambushed by river pirates. Kalthanan fought them, but was nearly overwhelmed when the dragonarmies slew his attackers. Gnatch said the dead bodies were from the dragonarmy, and they shouldn't have been fighting the pirates. To save his skin Kalthanan said Gnatch was one of the pirates, and tossed him in the river. The soldiers said they'd welcome a dark elf to their ranks, and took him to the inn of the Secret Shadow, where the bar mirror revealed a person's true nature. Kalthanan's reflection showed Raistlin, who was plotting against the Dark Queen, but shunting his traitorous thoughts to Kalthanan so she wouldn't suspect him. The soldiers turned against him, disliking magicians, but he was saved by gnatch and Myrella, one of the river pirates. They showed him that the griffon he'd tamed had come looking for him, and they took flight. Kalthanan knew Raistlin was going to Neraka, where a pivotal change in the war would occur, and they went to find him. The Dark Queen raised the Temple of Ishtar, corrupting it and making it a beacon for evil forces. Her plans were near fruition, and she warned Raistlin that he would pay if he intended to betray her. His thoughts of usurping her hit Kalthanan, but when he tried to enter the Temple with Myrella and Gnatch they were attacked by Draconians. They needed another way into the temple, and found a tunnel beneath the city. The tunnel was guarded by a Purple worm protecting her larva, but after severing her stinger tyhey were able to flee her. The Dark Queen's armies were assembled to watch Raistlin help her materialize on the physical plane. Myrella tried to help Kalthanan from being drawn to Raistlin's will, but the mage's magic was too strong, and the elf struck his ally. Raistlin took his hidden magic and thoughts back from his pawn.

(Dragonlance #8) - Raistlin's brother Caramon Majere brought Everman to him. Everman's sister Jasla was embedded in the foundation Stone, wedging open the entrance to Takhisis' realm. He convinced Everman to impale himself on the stone, freeing his sister, and shutting the doorway between worlds. Takhisis bellowed in anger, realizing she was being banished from Krynn. Her armies fell into chaos, and Kalthanan and company had to fight off a number of Draconians before fleeing on Kalthanan's griffon. They met Laurana and Tanis Half-Elvan, and Kalthanan apologized for his earlier violence when he was at Raistlin's mercy. Laurana was overjoyed that war on Krynn was over since Takhisis was no longer around to command her troops. All was forgiven, and Kalthanan left his friends, telling them he had unfinished business with Raistlin. He tracked down the mage, who said he knew why he'd been chosen as a pawn, and why he was so easily to manipulate into murder. Raistlin forced him to remember his past, that he Thanakan, not Kalthanan. Thanakan had not spared his son and disappeared, he'd killed his son and used magic to hide hide his nature, subsuming his true self so he was a duplicate of Kalthanan in mind and body. Thanakan accepted the truth, but told Raistlin he would not continue to serve his evil schemes, and would find his own destiny. Raistlin assured him he would follow the dark paths of his nature, and he would be back.

(Dragonlance #15, 16) - Kalthanan vanished at the end of the War of the Lance, and had several more encounters with Raistlin. Myrella was picked by the council of wizards to become an initiate, and for her test she was sent to the demi-plane Kalthanan was trapped in. The council observed Myrella, and mulled over whether or not Myrella could reconcile Kalthanan's competing good and evil natures to pass the test. Kalthanan confessed to Myrella that he was really the evil Thanakan, who'd killed his son Kalthanan and assumed his life and memories until Raistlin brought his evil to the surface. He'd located Raistlin's Mindbender, and would use it to take away the conflict that was driving him mad, leaving behind only the mind of Kalthanan or Thanakan. Myrella said she couldn't chance him fully reverting to Thanakan, and they fought a wizard's duel until she wrested the Mindbender artifact away from him. In another dimension Par-Salian and Ladonna, allied with Goldmoon and Riverwind were battling the rogue wizard Spyranus, who controlled the lost Tower of High Sorcery. When Spyranus threatened to defeat them Az-Araz-Zar summoned Myrella, who dragged Kalthanan along with her. They fought off the elementals, and withstood Spyranus' attempt to divide and conquer them. Ladonna realized Spyranus was bonded physically to the tower, and reluctant to separate himself from the source of his power, and Kalthanan tried unsuccessfully to goad him out. Spyranus extended the temple through a portal to Krynn, preparing to destroy it, when Myrella figured out how to defeat him. She summoned the Mindbender artifact, forcefully separating Spyranus from the temple, and with his connection severed he became a gibbering madman. She placed Kalthanan's soul in the Tower, and freed from his physical being his dark and light nature could exist without conflict, making him a neutral force and at peace with himself. Al-Araz-Zar revealed himself as Gilean, god of neutrality, and praised Myrella for passing the test. She would join the red-robes as a force for neutrality and a mediator between good and evil.
