They both had supporters, with Takal preaching peace, and Katko insisting that they invade and conquer their peaceful neighbors. Custom held that neither could hold sway until one was defeated in combat, but Katko refused to offer a challenge, hoping to kill Takal by treachery. He captured Takal, tied him to a stake in the ocean, and set piranha on him. The Sea Devils and a scientific expedition were searching for the lost Condor Temple, discovered Takal, and rescued him. Takal paraded the Devils before his people to gain their support; the Devils technology appeared to be magic to the Condors. Takal agreed to lead them to the Condor Temple, which was underwater in a volcano crater. Katko tried to kill the Devils, and ambushed them in the temple. He challenged Sea Devil leader Dane Dorrance to personal combat after severing his air hose. He was sure his natural ability to hold his breathe would let him easily defeat Dane and claim rule over the Condors. Against all odds Dane defeated him, and the Condors chose to side with the peaceful Takal.
