Group Affiliation: Green Lantern Corps, formerly Justice League International

Base of Operations: Oa, formerly New York, NY, Los Angeles

First Appearance: Green Lantern II #201 (June, 1986)

Powers: As a Green Lantern, Kilowog wielded a power ring capable of doing almost anything he could imagine as long as it was recharged by his emerald power battery once every 24 hours. Examples of its' powers include flight, phasing, creating giant objects formed of energy, and force fields. The power ring was totally ineffective against anything colored yellow. Kilowog possessed superhuman strength enabling him to lift several tons, and had a degree of invulnerability. Kilowog was an expert on genetics and a mechanical genius. He can easily improve and repair any form of machinery, and was able to pilot almost any vehicle.

History: (Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn #4-6)-Kilowog was born on the planet Bolovax Vik, a crowded world where the inhabitants share a communal mind. He was accepted into the Green Lantern Corps, but this meant leaving Bolovax, as well as removing himself from the communal mind. After proving his worth and loyalty Kilowog became a Green Lantern trainer.

(Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn #4) - Oa; Kilowog was assigned to train rookie Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the use of his power ring, and put Hal through the wringer for a number of weeks until he was satisfied that Hal was improving.

(Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn #5, 6) - Kilowog and the Corps defended Oa against an attack by Legion. The Corps failed to prevent Legion from reaching the inner sanctum of the Guardians of the Universe, but Hal Jordan defeated Legion before he could harm the Guardians. Kilowog boasted that Jordan was his trainee.

(Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn 2 #4, 6) - Kilowog and the Green Lantern Corps put down a revolt on Korugar. They learned from the mob's leader Katma-Tui that they were rebelling against Green Lantern Sinestro's tyrannical rule of the planet. The Guardians put Sinestro on trial for abusing his power, and Kilowog told Hal Jordan he was in shock, no Lantern had ever turned to the dark side like Sinestro. Katma-Tui was appointed the new Lantern of Korugar, and Kilowog said he was looking forward to training a new Lantern with an attitude problem.

(Green Lantern III #100) - Kilowog and the Corps helped Green Lantern Hal Jordan and time-traveling GL Kyle Rayner defeat Sinestro and prevented him from setting an asteroid on a collision course with Oa.

(Green Lantern IV #17 (fb)) - Years after Abin Sur’s death the Corps learned that he had a son, Amon Sur, and Katma-Tui, Kilowog and Tomar-Tu delivered news of his death to the boy and his mother. Amon was enraged that his father’s successor Hal Jordan was not the one to break the news.

During the Crisis, Bolovax was destroyed, but Kilowog managed to save the souls of the inhabitants by storing them in his power ring. When he found a suitable planet he released them, but this planet was destroyed by Sinestro. Kilowog was now the last of his race.

Kilowog was assigned to Earth, where he spent time in the Soviet Union. He liked socialism, because it reminded him of Bolovax Vik, so he aided Russia in creating the Rocket Red Brigade.

The Corps held the Justice League back from interfering, but seeing the toll Hal and Guy's battle was taking on New York City they demanded they change the nature of the fight or take it to space. Hal and Guy fought man to man without power rings. Hal won, and the Corps celebrated.

(Green Lantern III #33) - Hal Jordan used his power ring to contact Kilowog and told him he'd found Arisia, and asked Kilowog to take her to Oa. Kilowog was glad Arisia was safe, but told Hal he was overwhelmed finishing his training of the new Corps members, and would soon be busy starting a new GLC recruitment drive, so he couldn't help Hal at the moment.

(Green Lantern: Mosaic #6) - Oa; Kilowog visited John Stewart and introduced him to his Green Lantern trainees. Kilowog was apprehensive about the trainees being evaluated by the Guardians of the Universe, especially since two of them, Kreon and Boodikka, were always at each other's throats. Kilowog asked John to give them a motivational speech, instead John forced the trainees to confront their worst fears on the mental plane. In the end the trainees were forced to get along, and Kilowog thanked John, telling him he was now ready to present his students to the Guardians.

(Green Lantern III #34, 35) - Kilowog and the GLC were called to Oa to defend the Guardians against Entropy. Kilowog and the other Earth heroes agreed to take back only those Mosaic inhabitants who wanted to return home.

(Green Lantern III #45) - The Darkstars tried to prevent Kilowog and the GLC from interfering with the Triarch, but the Corps' experience working as a team helped them defeat the Darkstars. As Hal and the Corps were about to deal with the Guardians, L.E.G.I.O.N. called in a fleet of ships to confront them.

(Green Lantern III #49, 50) - Hal Jordan went renegade after Coast City was destroyed, and sought to drain the central power battery. The Guardians put a number of Lanterns in his path, the last one being Kilowog. Kilowog tried to talk Hal down while fighting him, but it didn't work. Hal took away his ring and blasted him with the power ring, incinerating Kilowog.

(Day of Judgment #4) - The soul of Green Lantern Hal Jordan summoned the spirit of Kilowog and a band of deceased Corps members to help him fight and weaken Asmodel / Spectre. Hal tried to apologize to Kilowog for killing him, but Kilowog told him to keep his mind on the fight. The attack was successful, and Hal took the Spectre-Force away from Asmodel, becoming the new host of the spirit of vengeance, and gaining a shot at redemption.

(Green Lantern: Rebirth #2-6) - Kyle Rayner brought Hal Jordan’s body to Earth, and Kilowog, who’d been possessed by Parallax through his power ring, tried to destroy it, but Ganthet intervened. Ganthet held him off long enough for Kyle to flee with the body to JLA Watchtower. Ganthet managed to shake Paraax’s control of Kilowog, and Kilowog joined the fight against Parallax, weakening him enough for the Spectre to separate Hal and Parallax. Parallax infected Ganthet and prepared to spread fear throughout the universe, but the newly resurrected Hal Jordan appeared and prepared for battle against the villain alongside Kilowog and the other GLs. They combined their forces to drive Parallax from Ganthet’s body and trap Parallax in the Central Power Battery.

(Green Lantern IV #4) - Following the defeat of Parallax the Guardians were reforming the GLC, sening rings to the 3,600 sectors of space and bringing back recruits to Oa, and they chose Kilowog to train the new generation of Lanterns. Hal visited Kilowog and wanted to know what the Guardians wanted from him, and Kilowog admitted that they didn’t need his involvement aside from continuing to patrol his old sector. New recruits Bareer Wot, B’dg, Grumb, and Lok Neboora were taken aback because Hal was an Earthman, and Hal realized they had no idea he’d destroyed the last GLC. Kilowog reminded him that the universe was a big place, and in the big picture Hal wasn’t that important. Hal told him he could live with that. He had a mock combat with Kilowog for the new recruits until he was recalled to Earth on a mission.

(Green Lantern IV #11, 12) - Hal Jordan learned that the Green Lanterns he thought he’d killed as Parallax had been kept on Biot by the Manhunters. Hal and Guy ate in the GLC messhall when Turytt and several GLC rookies made it clear that they thought Hal was a traitor who deserved to die. Guy exacerbated the situation and a brawl erupted that Kilowog had to break up. Kilowog established his presence as top dog among the rookies and gave seventy demerits to all the rookies involved. Hal went against the Guardians orders to travel to Biot and save his Corps teammates. Salakk was concerned that his friend would be discharged from the Corps and talked it over with Kilowog. Kilowog said that when a Corps member was in enemy hands it was the Corps responsibility to rescue them.

(Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1) - Kilowog on Oa when the planet was assaulted by the Sinestro Corps. After a valiant fight many Green Lanterns were killed, and the Sinestro Corps fled with sciencell prisoners Superboy Prime and Cyborg Superman as their newest recruits.

(Green Lantern IV #21) - The Corps began picking up the pieces after the assault on Oa, and Salakk realized that the Sinestro Corps were picking off Lanterns across the universe, leaving over 50 dead.  Hal Jordan tried to attend to the wounded Tomar-Tu, and the Lost Lanterns told him to back off. They told him they’d see one of their own die before asking him or any other human for help. Kilowog stepped in, reminding them that now was not the time to keep opening old wounds. The Lost Lanterns were sent to Qward to rescue Kyle Rayner from the Sinestro Corps, while the rest of the Lanterns were ordered by the Guardians to stay on Oa and prepare for another assault.

(Green Lantern Corps II #14) - The Sinestro Corps took out a sector house in 2263, so Kilowog rallied the Corps members on Oa, telling them they were going to take the fight to the Sinestro soldiers.

Arkillo and Kilowog clashed in personal battle, wuith the vicious killer Arkillo pleased to face a worthy foe. Despite the GLC’s efforts Ranx ripped a hole in Mogo’s surface and sent in the Children of the White Lobe, the Sinestro Corps latest allies, so they could explode and destroy the power ring at Mogo’s core. Kilowog sent corpsmen Yat, Kol, Stel and Chthatis off to Ranx to destroy the planet’s brain. Fearing the prophecy of the Blackest Night the Guardians rewrote the Book of Oa, allowing lethal force against the Sinestro Corps. Kilowog never thought he’d see the day, but the GLC were able to slaughter the Children of the White Lobe, and the Sinestro Corps suffered heavy losses. Sodam Yat destroyed Ranx, ending the threat to Mogo, and the Sinestro Corps turned their attention to Earth.

(Green Lantern IV #24, Green lantern Corps II #17) - Kilowog and the GLC arrived on Earth to fend off the Sinestro Corps invasion of the planet. Arkillo confronted Kilowog in San Diego, demanding a rematch and promising that his men would prevail because they weren’t squeamish about taking a life. Arkillo said he saw fear in Kilowog’s heart, fear of what he might become if he started taking lives without remorse. After Arkillo slaughtered several bystanders Kilowog crippled him, and ripped off his power ring, along with his ring finger. The GLC were recalled to NYC, where the Anti-Monitor had landed. The Guardians had learned that the Anti-Monitor planned on collapsing the multiverse by taking control of Earth.

(Green Lantern IV #25) - The Sinestro Corps War raged on Earth, and while Kilowog, the GLC and an army of superheroes battled the Corps the Anti-Monitor prepared to unleash an anti-matter wave to destroy Earth. With Earth’s destruction, the entire 52 would fall, and he would once again rule all that was. The GLC ruptured the heart of Anti-Monitor’s Warworld, the Sinestro Corps central power battery, and created a shield around Warworld and the Monitor. The ensuing blast nearly destroyed the Anti-Monitor, and he was finished off by Superman-Prime, who betrayed him for having destroyed his home, Earth-Prime. GL Hal Jordan defeated Sinestro in personal combat, and the Sinestro Corps, lacking any leadership, fled Earth. The heroes rejoiced and began rebuilding the damage the Sinestro Corps did.
