History(Hawkman IV #3 (fb, BTS)) - Indian god Shiva created the Battlelands, a pocket dimension, as a world for his son Ganesha's children. The elephantine Komeriah lashed with the blue-skinned humanoid Makhnir, who wanted to make them slaves in their diamond mines to support their opulence. Their war waged centuries, but remained a stalemate.

(Hawkman IV #3, 4) - Hawkman and villain Kristopher Renard Roderic and his supervillain thugs both sought the mystical Third Eye of Shiva. When Hawkman and the villains found the temple of Shiva containing the Third Eye, it opened up a dimensional portal to the Battlelands. Hawkman and company were attacked by the Komeriah, who mistook them for their mortal enemy the Makhnir. Hawkman forced them to flee, and they were taken in by the Makhnir. Hawkman learned that they kept captive Komeriah in their diamond mines as slaves, and wanted to free them. Shadow Thief told him it wasn't his fight, but Hawkman replied that he'd fight injustice wherever he found it. He was knocked unconscious and chained by Fahir, leader of the Makhnir. The only reason his people took Hawkman in was because they hoped he'd share his secret of flight to help them against the Komeriah, but since he'd proved he was not an ally they put him to work as a slave. Aalok, leader of the Komeriah, had allowed himself to be taken captive so he could attack the base of the marble pillars that held up the Makhnir city of Om. Hawkman assisted him, and a standing army of Komeriah poured into Om. The battle went against the Makhnir, and when Hakman's ally Hawkgirl opened a portal back to earth Aalok told him he'd helped them immensely, and asked him to leave. he hoped that by defeating the Makhnir in battle by themselves the Komeriah would earn the Makhnir's respect and be allowed to live alongside them in peace.
