History: (Martian Manhunter II #33, 34) - Ma’Alefa’Ak and his twin J’Onn were born to Sha’Sheen J’Onzz an M’Yrinn J’Onzz. Sha’Sheeen was a precog and gave Ma’Alefa’Ak his name, which meant “Darkness in the Heart” based on a vision she had of him being a great danger to Mars. As he grew the Martian community shunned him, and though J’Onn reached out to his brother, Ma’Alefa’Ak warned him that he was full of venom and that J’Onn would one day hate him. Ma’Alefa’Ak became a physicist and theologian and made contact with the New Gods of Apokolips, and gave them access to Mars. Ma’Alefa’Ek told the Martian council what he’d done and introduced them to Glorious Gofrey and other Gods, who lulled the Martians into a sense of security. After a talk with M’Yrinn J’Onzz the New Gods helped Darkseid develop the Anti-Life Equation. They then raided Mars and kidnapped a number of Martians including Ma’Alefa’Ak. Ma’Alefa’Ak. Was taken to Desad’s torture chamber where his min and body were taken apart and reconstructed. J’Onn J’Onzz came to Apokolips and rescued him, but at that point Ma’Alefa’Ak was a darker individual.

(Martian Manhunter #35) - Darkseid had Ma’Aleph’Ak probe the minds of his fellow Martians to seek for clues to the Anti-Life Equation. Ma’Aleph’Ak was caught by his mother Sha’Sheen, who he killed. He fled to Venus, but J’Onn pursued him and offered to save his brother’s mind by taking some of the darkness Darkseid put in him, but he refused. They fought, J’Onn was victorious, and brought Ma’Aleph’Ak to Mars for judgment. He begged Darkseid to save him, but Darkseid did not suffer failure and refused to lift a finger to help him.

(Martian Manhunter II #7 (fb), 0) - Malefic was brought in by his twin J’Onn J’Ozz after violating the minds of other Martians, the most serious crime in their society. The assembly of minds found him guilty, stripped him of his telepathic powers, and erased his memory. They implanted a false set of memories in him,  nd he believed he was a mutant born without telepathy. Malefic wanted revenge and engineered the telepathic virus H’Ronmeer’s Curse. The Martian authorities wanted to execute him, but J’Onn told them they needed more evidence. He did prove Malefic guilty and confronted him, but Malefic eluded him. After J'Onn's wife and daughter were killed by the virus he fought Malefic and the battle collapsed Malefic's headquarters, the Central Power Cathedral, and J'Onn thought he was dead. Malefic pulled himself free of the rubble much later, and he eventually learned that J'onn was alive and well on Earth.

(Martian Manhunter II #3) - Malefic came to Earth, and posing as Martian Manhunter’s human identity John Jones he used his Martian-vision to murer Manhunter’s friend Karen Smith.

(Martian Manhunter II #4, 6-9) - Malefic broke into Z’Onn Z’Orr, and after shapeshifting to look like Martian Manhunter he gave Saturnian Jemm several intense beatings. Manhunter checked in on Jemm in Z’Onn Z’Orr and Jemm attacked him. He read Jemm’s mind and realized he’d been driven half-mad from beatings he received. After subduing Jemm he knew he could no longer care from him, and gave him to Wonder Woman. He didn’t realize it was actually the Malefic disguised as Wonder Woman, and Malefic had more plans for Jemm. Malefic nearly killed Jemm, and returned him to Z’Onn Z’Orr. Jemm alerted the JLA, and they were convinced he was a victim of the Martian Manhunter. The JLA found Malefic’s desert base, where he was using Martian tech to terraform the desert into a Martian landscape as well as perform gruesome genetic experiments on humans. He shapeshifted into his Martian Manhunter form and battled the JLA, the battle ended in a stalemate but Malefic’s lab was destroyed. Malefic was still content that he’d convinced the JLA that Manhunter’d gone rogue. The JLA later questioned Manhunter at the JLA Watchtower, and Malefic turned himself invisible and attacked the JLA. They assumed Manhunter was responsible, leading to a huge fight. Manhunter tried to extricate himself by flying off in a JLA shuttle, but malefic had anticipated this, and rigged it to go up in flames. He revealed himself to Manhunter and gloated that he’d taken both his reputation and his life. Malefic hunted down the individual members of the JLA until Manhunter revealed that he’d survived and challenged his brother to a one-on-one confrontation on Z’Onn Z’Orr. Manhunter restored both his telepathic abilities and the accompanying weakness to fire, and then piloted Z’Orr into the sun. Manhunter escaped Z’Orr and left Malefic behind to burn alive in the heart of the sun.
