In the pre-Crisis DC Universe Midnight lived on Earth 2, operated out of Big City (Who's Who Update '88 #2 established his post-Crisis base of operations as New York City) and may have been inspired to become Midnight after reading about the adventures of the Spirit (as theorized in Who's Who #15).
Midnight was originally published by Quality Comics, which DC obtained the rights to in 1956.
Midnight received profiles in Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #15 and Who's Who Update '88 #2.
