History: (Swamp Thing I #12) - Milo Mobius lived in the 1300s in Europe and feared the black death, so he seduced the sorceress Gretel and convinced her to grant him immortality. She was furious at having been betrayed and used by him, so Getel gave him the hell-jewel that gave him his immortality, and told him that even though he had eternal life he wouldn’t enjoy it. She promised he would want to end his life, and granted that someone who considered him a friend could kill him and end his immortality, but she assured him that he never had nor would he have a friend in the world. She then cursed him to be flung back in time after a number of ailed attempts to kill himself, so that he would endlessly relive his failures. Milo did end up wanting to die, and found himself unable to. He was flung into the Mesozoic, where he met Swamp Thing, who’d also been thrown into the past by the hell-jewel. Swamp Thing and Milo battled a dinosaur, seemingly resulting in Milo’s death. The hell-jewel flung Swamp Thing into the future, but Milo just shook off his injuries, picked up the jewel, and walked away. Swamp Thing appeared in Rome, circa 100 A.D. where Milo was currently performing as a gladiator. His appearance startled Milo, and his opponent stabbed him. The jewel then thrust Swamp Thing into Europe during the plague years, where he once again saw the man from the past. He watched Milo being cursed by Gretel before the hell-jewel sent Swamp Thing to the Civil War era, where he saw Mobius almost end his life once again in the service of the Union army, and he then ended up in the present. Milo told him he’d hoped the hell-jewel would attract him, and begged Swamp Thing to kill him. Swamp Thing refused, and when Milo ran after him he fell into quicksand. This final near-death catapulted him back to the beginning of time.
