History: Mongul's father and namesake was the despotic ruler of Warworld, and after his death Mongul and his sister Mongal took on the responsibility of ruling Warworld and seeking conquest across the universe. Mongul had to temporarily team with his father's nemesis Superman to battle Imperiax, who threatened Warworld.
(Adventures of Superman #594) - Mongul was drafted into President Luthor's Suicide Squad, and Luthor sent the Suicide Squad to the JLA Watchtower on the moon, and with JLAer Steel's help they used JLA teleportation technology to free Doomsday. Doomsday decimated the entire Squad except for Black, who manipulated Doomsday's mind to replace his hatred of Superman with a hatred for Imperiex.
Mongul renewed hostilities against Earth, blaming his father's former superhero enemies for his death.
(Superman / Batman #3) - Mongul, under the thrall of Gorilla Grodd, was among the number of supervillains that attempted to collect the billion dollar bounty President Luthor placed on Superman’s head but failed.
(Infinite Crisis
#1) -
(Green Lantern IV #7, 8) - Mongul stole the Black Mercy from the JLA trophy room. Years before his father had almost destroyed Superman with Mercy, flowers which paricitized their hosts, leaving them catatonic while making them imagine they were living their finest dreams. He landed on Earth, intending to conquer the planet, but not understanding why his father saw any use in it. He planted a field of mercies that began taking over the locals. He was confronted by Green Larrow, and Green Lantern, who still held a deep grudge against the first Mongul for destroying Coast City, and vowed that the name Mongul would never again be feared. After an intense battle Mongul managed to attach Mercies to the heroes. He used the bioelectric energy generated by all his Black mercy victims to open up a star gate and summon Mongal, who was understandably upset that he’d thaken the Black Mercy, a legacy meant for both of them. Mongul told her he’d share his title and the Mongul legacy with no one else, so she had to die. Their fight was interrupted by Arrow and Lantern, who’d shaken off the Black Mercy’s effects. They reactivated the star gate, sending both of them back to the Cygnus Star-System. Mongul took advantage of the distraction, knocking off Mongal’s head with a single blow.
