As Mr. Ghool he assembled a gang, and had them disguise themselves with makeup to be as monstrous as he was. They set up a hideout under the cemetery and amassed a fortune robbing the dead. When the authorities started inquiring into the grave-robbing, Ghool started killing city officials, sending them a coffin to warn them of their impending demise before forcing them to drink poison. His latest target was D.A. Morton B. Randall, and he made him drink a concoction that put him into suspended animation.
