History: (Kamandi #6) - In the aftermath of the nuclear Great Disaster most of humanity perished, and the majority of survivors devolved into feral savages, while animals evolved intelligence. Puma-Men made their living poaching humans on Sanctuary, a preserve set up by the Lion-Men. Pumas detested lions for the weakness they showed in keeping humans safe, and disliked how closley they were related to lions. Lions deposited Kamandi, the last boy on Earth, and his companion Flower in the Sanctuary. Kamandi became leader of the human herd by beating off fellow humans that attacked him, and when the poachers tried to capture them, he fought them off, but they promised to retuirn. Kamandi and Flower set themselves up in an abandoned house, and Flower slept soundly, saying she felt safe with her new brave friend. The pumas returned, catching them unaware, and shooting Flower when she fought back. The lions tracking the poachers made their move, arresting the pumas. Their leader Sultin commented that it was heartbreaking seeing the animal Kamandi mourn his lost companion.
