Occupation: Tempter
Group Affiliation: None
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: The Dreaming, formerly The Garden of Eden
First Appearance: (comics) Dreaming #1 (June, 1996)
Powers: Tempto had superhuman powers of persuasion. He was once a serpent, but currently manifested as a limbless man. As belief in the Biblical stories faded, so did his power.
History: (Dreaming #2 (fb, BTS), 3 (fb, BTS)) - A serpent appeared in the garden of Eden, and led to Eve's downfall. The creator expressly forbid Eve from eating of the trees of knowledge and life, and the serpent convinced her to disobey. After she ate of the fruit, Adam succumbed to temptation as well, and the creator cast them out of Eden.
(Dreaming #2 (fb, BTS)) - <1915> The serpent, now much reduced in might, went by the name of Tempto. He boarded the RMS Lusitania, which was soon to go down from U-Boat attack.
(Dreaming #1-3) - Tempto spent his time in the Dreaming convincing dreamers to act out urges they had in the waking world that would ruin their lives. Tempto came across the golden gargoyle Goldie, who ran away from home because she couldn't take seeing her master Abel killed by huis brother Cain. Tempto convinced her she could help Abel if she went on a mission for him, and lured her to Terra Incognita. Tempto took Goldie to the garden of Eden, and he convinced her to modify the story so there never was a fall of man. He regretted his role in that story, and wanted to make things right. The garden was a paradise again, with Eve restored to Adam, although she was none too happy about it, not wanting to forget the knowledge she'd attained or the memories of how man kept falling after being expulsed from Eden. Goldie sensed the wrongness of the situation, and restored the story to normal, while Tempto slipped away. Eve told Cain and Abel that golden gargoyles guarded all the stories, especially the old ones that bound together the Dreaming and the waking world. She showed Goldie and the brothers the bones of Goldie's predecessor, telling them that she should have hatched and taught Goldie, but Dream's absence changed things. Despite Abel's objections, Eve told him Goldie had to remain to grow into being the guardian she was destined to be.
