TERRA-MAN (pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths)

Real Name: Tobias Manning

Class: Human technology-user

Occupation: Outlaw

Group Affiliation: None

Known Relatives: Jess Manning (father, deceased)

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Metropolis, formerly Cripple Creek, 1880s era

First Appearance:  Superman I #249 (March, 1972)

Powers: Terra-Man's physiology enabled him to exist in the vacuum of space, and he rode the winged space steed Nova. His six shooters fired bullets as well as an energy lasso.

History: (New Adventures of Superboy #23) - <1888> Cripple Creek, Toby's father, the famous outlaw Jess Manning, was apprehended by a sheriff, so Toby stole a gun and broke his dad out of prison. Jess mused that Toby had the makings of an excellent outlaw. An alien outlaw landed in Cripple Creek to refuel, and Jess shot at him, so the alien killed him with a raygun. Toby wept, but allowed the alien to take him into space. The alien promised to make him into a space-outlaw that would surpass his own legend, to be the son he never had.

(Superman I #299) - The alien Xviar planned to charge up Superman's powers until he became a superbomb and destroyed Earth. Toward this purpose he teleported several of Superman's deadliest foes, including Toyman, into the apartment of Clark Kent, Superman's civilian identity. Superman responded, and Xviar teleported the villains across the globe, making Superman chase them.  Superman easily defeated Toyman, Prankster and Terra-Man in Egypt. As Superman approached critical mass he figured out Xviar's scheme, and foiled him by defeating his final adversary, Kryptonite Man, in his non-powered civilian identity.
