TRIBBLES

Base of Operations:  Iota Geminorum IV (Earth-Star Trek)

First Appearance: (television) Star Trek: The Original Series "The Trouble With Tribbles" (December, 1967), (DC Comics)

Powers: Tribbles were tiny furry aliens most proficient at reproduction. With their populations left unchecked they devoured everything edible in their path. The cooing of Tribbles endeared them to most humanoid species, having a relaxing effect on the nervous system.

History: (Who's Who in Star Trek #2) - <Stardate 4524.2> Cyrano Jones, entrepreneur, discovered the planet of the Tribbles, and realized they'd be perfect pets, harmless, easy to care for and very easy to breed. Jones brought his new wares to Space Station K-7, where the Enterprise was making a delivery of quadrotritical, a high-yield grain to Sherman's Planet, an important Federation outpost. The Klingon empire also had a claim on Sherman's Planet, so Captain Koloth and his crew took shore leave on K-7. Jones sold some Tribbles to a K-7 bartender, and they soon ended up on the Enterprise. They made their way through air vents to gobble the Enterprise's food, and Enterprise Captain Kirk reasoned that they could easily consume the supplies of K-7. Medical officer Bones examined dead Tribbles on K-7 and the Enterprise, and realized that the quadrotritical had been poisoned. A Klingon agent was found responsible for the tampering, hoping to kill the colonists of Sherman's Planet, allowing the Klingons with the sole claim to it. Jones was charged with trafficking a dangerous species, and he was well aware that without their natural predators the Tribbles would reproduce out of control. Cyrano was charged with exterminating invasive Tribbles, and the Klingons, to whom the Tribbles reacted violently, aided him by genetically engineering a "glommer" to eat Tribbles. The Klingons despised the Tribbles and their cuteness enough to want to eradicate them from their homeworld, so Cyrano Jones kept silent on that point.

The Tribbles, along with the rest of the characters from DC Comics run on Star Trek, were not part of the mainstream DC Universe. To simplify matters, I refer to these characters as inhabiting Earth-Star Trek. Surely, somewhere out there in the 52, there's a Star Trek universe, or there would be if DC still had the rights to make comics about Star Trek.

The Tribbles received a profile in Who's Who in Star Trek #2, a summary of their television appearances.
