First Appearance: Wow Comics #18 (Fawcett) (October, 1943)

Powers: Dudley possessed no superpowers, but he was kind hearted, courageous, and loyal.

History(Power of Shazam II #1) - Dudley kept an eye on Billy Batson, covering for him when he was late or absent from school while fighting crime as Captain Marvel. He learned where Billy lived, and introduced himself to his landlord as Uncle Dudley. Dudley told Billy they had an important talk to have, but he suffered a heart attack before he could finish. Billy changed into Marvel, and flew him to the hospital. The half-conscious Dudley called him Billy, and Marvel finally realized why Dudley kept sticking his neck out for him.

(Power of Shazam II #4) - Dudley showed up with groceries for Billy, and told him they had to talk, because he knew his secret. Billy didn't know he was referring to the fact that Billy lived without an adult guardian, and blurted out that he was Captain Marvel. After explaining that he changed by magic, he begged Dudley to keep his secret. Dudley said he would, and offered Billy a place to stay if he ever needed it. Dudley wondered to himself if he could keep such a monumental secret all to himself.

(Power of Shazam II #10) - Dudley found a Mr. Tawky-Tawny tiger doll in the subway, and the doll came to life. Tawny had guided Captain Marvel s career, as well as Mary Marvel s. Dudley went for drinks with Tawny, and everyone but him saw a crazy old man ordering drinks for a doll. Tawny sent Dudley, now alcohol fueled and courageous, on a quest to help Mary Marvel rescue the wizard Shazam. Dudley found the subway that led to Shazam s Rock of Eternity, and told Mary, who d found a resurrection spell, to use it on the occupant behind an ibis icon. She smashed it, revealing a sarcophagus hidden inside.

(Power of Shazam II #10) - With Captain Marvel fighting Neron during the Underworld saga, Mary took it upon herself to find Shazam. She hoped Mr. Tawky-Tawny could help, and when she returned home to retrieve him she heard her parents talking to the police, worried about nice, innocent Mary out all night. She understood the seriousness of the situation, but giggled when her dad suggested she was with her boyfriend  Billy. Tawky came to life, and guided her to the subway that accessed the Rock of Eternity. Using the wisdom of Solomon she found the entrance, but Tawny couldn't enter the magical realm and turned back into a toy. Mary found Shazam's Rock a mess, and a spell book open to a spell of resurrection. Tawny was found by Billy s friend Uncle Dudley, and he sent him to help Mary. Dudley showed Mary an icon of an ibis, and told her it was what she was looking for. She smashed it, revealing a sarcophagus hidden inside.

(Power of Shazam II #11) - Black Adam followed Mary, Dudley and Tawny into the subway, and Ibis  tomb. He ripped the Tawny doll to shreds, Blaze was under the impression that Tawny was helping them, but his good nature only let him aid the Marvel Family. Mary cast Shazam s resurrection spell, bringing Ibis the Invincible, a powerful magician under Shazam s protection, back to life. He banished Black Adam to Hades, and the heroes had to respond to an attack on Fawcett by the Seven Deadly Sins. Captain Marvel, newly returned from the Underworld Unleashed affair, lured the Sins into leaving the civilians alone, and taking residence in his powerful body. Ibis managed to free Captain Marvel of their influence, and make them solid, but he knew they d need help to drag the Sins back to the Rock of Eternity. He gave life back to Tawky-Tawny, gave Shazam powers to Uncle Dudley, and summoned Captain Marvel, Jr. and Bulletman to their side. After an intense battle they returned the Sins to their prisons, and Tawny was delighted to be alive, asking Ibis to make his condition permanent. The heroes asked for Ibis  help in freeing Shazam from Blaze, but just then the Rock of Eternity shook, as Blaze was trying to free Shazam's old enemy the Three Faces of Evil.

(Power of Shazam II #12) - Ibis, already tiring of being awake, made a plan to end Blaze's villainy. He sent Captain Marvel and Mary to Hades to free Shazam, and sent Cap Jr. and Bulletman outside the Rock of Eternity to delay her from freeing the Three Faces. The Marvels freed Shazam, and Sarah Primm, breaking Blaze's hold over Black Adam. Shazam and Ibis cleaved the Rock, freeing the Three Faces, and at Shazam's command Black Adam battled it. The Marvel Family forced the Rock back together, trapping Blaze alongside the Three Faces and Adam. Dudley was changed back to normal, and invited Tawny to live with him.

UNCLE MARVEL (pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths)

Real Name: Dudley (first name unrevealed)

Class: Parallel Earth (Earth-S) human

Occupation: Superhero, businessman, president of Shazam, Inc.

Group Affiliation: Marvel Family

Known Relatives: Audrey (wife), Mary Dudley (Freckles Marvel, niece)

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Fawcett City, Earth-S

First Appearance: Wow Comics #18 (Fawcett) (October, 1943)

Powers: Uncle Marvel was kind hearted and a talented businessman. He claimed to possess the powers of Shazam, but this was a fraud, and when he said the magic word he merely changed into his superhero outfit.

History: Businessman Dudley found Mary Marvel's Good Deed Ledger, detailing her family's superhero adventures, and revealing their secret identities. Dudley hatched a scheme, and introduced himself to Mary as her long-lost uncle from California, and claimed he was a superhero too. He said the magic word Shazam and stripped off his outer wear, revealing a Marvel Family costume. He set up Shazam, Inc,., with himself as president, and dedicated it as a non-profit to spend money the Marvels earned in their adventures. The Marvel Family saw through his ruse of being superpowered, but humored him because he was so kind and enthusiastic.

(Marvel Family (Fawcett) #1) - Sterling Morris got a report of an identified object from deep space approaching Earth at the speed of light, and asked Billy to cover the story. Billy visited an observatory, but the astronomers were baffled. The object turned out to be Black Adam, who’d been flying towards Earth for thousands of years. He arrived and proclaimed that he would conquer the planet. Captain Marvel and Marvel, Jr. Confronted him, but their powers were too evenly matched and they fought to a standstill before Adam decided to retreat for the moment. The Marvels changed back into Billy and Freddy to see Shazam and ask him if he knew anything about Black Adam, whose powers were so similar to theirs. Unbeknownst to them Black Adam was following them. Shazam told the boys that thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt he made Teth-Adam into Mighty Adam, his first champion. Adam’s power corrupted him, and after killing the pharaoh he declared himself ruler of Egypt. As punishment Shazam renamed him Black Adam and banished him to the furthest star in the universe, never realizing he’d be determined enough to find his way back to Earth. Shazam vanished and Black Adam tied up Freddy and Billy, gagging them so they couldn’t say the magic words that gave them power. Mary Marvel and Uncle Marvel realized the boys were missing, and made their way to Shazam’s throne room only to discover their friends trussed up. Mary fought Black Adam, while Uncle Marvel freed the boys and summoned Shazam, asking him how to defeat Black Adam. Shazam told Uncle Marvel he had to get Black Adam to say his name. Uncle Marvel told the Marvel Family that Black Adam was too powerful for them to defeat and said he should join their family. He annoyed Black Adam by mispronouncing Shazam’s name until Adam spoke the magic word, turning him back into Teth-Adam. His mortal form was 5,000 years old, and he rapidly turned into an elderly man before decaying into a skeleton. Shazam thanked the Marvel Family for destroying his worst mistake, and said he was glad he entrusted his power to good people.

(Mary Marvel (Fawcett) #17) - Mrs. Upcreek visited Mary and Uncle Marvel at Shazam, Inc and begged them to find her dog Brutus, promising to reward them handsomely. She wrote a description of Brutus on a piece of paper, but a gust of wind blew it out the window. Uncle Marvel said he didn’t need a description anyway since a dog named Brutus would certainly be big and tough. Mary and Uncle visited the dog pound first, and after Uncle Marvel accidentally let the dogs all escape Mary had to round them up. They checked the personal ads to see if anyone found a lost dog and discovered a note from dog-nappers who demanded a ransom for “B.” Uncle Marvel got some phony money from his office and met Barky Bowser and his gang. They saw through the ruse and started to rough up Uncle Marvel, so Mary had to come to his rescue. Barky sicced his watch dog on Uncle Marvel, giving them a chance to flee. The watch dog led the Marvels to another one of Barky’s hideouts and they made short work of the crooks. They found the stolen dog and returned him to Mrs. Upcreek only to learn that the dog, named Bonzo, belonged to her neighbor. Bonzo went home and Uncle Marvel grabbed some fruit from a fruit bowl to think the case over. Brutus, a Chihuahua, had fallen asleep in the fruit bowl, and gave Uncle Marvel a nip. Mrs. Upcreek was delighted to be reunited with her pet.

(Captain Marvel Adventures (Fawcett) #59) - Aunt Minerva was an unassuming old woman and secretly a ruthless crimelord. She had respect and money, with every criminal in the city cutting her in on their action and paying her tribute, but was lonely because her previous five husbands had all passed away. She got a flyer for Shazam Inc. In the mail promising to solve anyone’s problems and visited Uncle Dudley’s office. Dudley was chatting with Billy Batson and she explained her dilemma. Criminal Handsome Harry was sick of giving a percentage of his earnings to Minerva, and came to Shazam Inc. To see if they could send her to prison. Harry was surprised to see Minerva, and a gunfight ensued. Dudley and Billy changed into Uncle Marvel and Captain Marvel and easily handled Harry and his men. Aunt Minerva was furious at Harry’s defiance, and after cutting the lights she kidnapped him and his men. She’d become enamored with Uncle Marvel and decided to abscond with him as well. Aunt Minerva informed him they’d be married as soon as possible, and a panicked Uncle phoned up Captain Marvel, asking him to save him. Aunt Minerva blasted Captain Marvel with her pistol, but he shrugged it off and spanked her to teach her a lesson. Aunt Minerva then developed a crush on Captain Marvel, and as she was dragged away by the police she promised to see him again.

(Marvel Family (Fawcett) #10) - On the Marvel Family Round-Table television program Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel, Jr, Mary Marvel and Uncle Marvel talked about the threat Sivana posed to the world. The Sivana Family flew their rocketships to the Rock of Eternity, traveling to the past and future to retrieve the elements protium, neutrium and electrium from the legendary Atlantis. Shazam alerted the Marvel Family, who pursued them but couldn’t stop the Sivanas from succeeding. Sivana used the elements toi power a machine he invented that created a cloud of free electrons around Earth, keeping the Shazam lightning from reaching the Marvel Family. With the Marvels no longer a threat the Sivanas were confident they’d take their rightful spot as rules of the universe. The Sivana Family tried to hunt the Marvels for sport, but the heroes evaded them and shut down the machine. The Marvels called down their lightning, smashed the machine to pieces and defeated the Sivana Family.

(Shazam! I #1) - <1953> The mayor of Fawcett City threw a celebration at city hall to honor the Marvel Family, with a number of their friends and fans in attendance, including Uncle Dudley. The wicked Sivana Family chose that moment to strike from Sivana's spaceship, hitting the crowd with a vortex transporter paralyzer ray, drawing them into space, and encasing them in a globe of suspendium, a compound that would put them in suspended animation. Sivana, Junior slapped his dad on the back for a job well done, causing Sivana to lose control of his spaceship and crashing into the suspendium, trapping the villains with their victims. The globe orbited the sun for decades until the heat of the sun began to melt the suspendium, freeing the Marvel Family. They realized the suspendium was being pulled into the sun's orbit, and had to act fast to save the lives of everyone inside the globe. The Sivana Family revived and flew their spaceship to safety while the Marvel Family pushed the globe back to Earth before smashing it, freeing their friends and returning to Fawcett. Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr. went into space to search for the Sivanas, while Captain Marvel checked out one of Sivana's old mountain hideouts. He found the Sivana Family working on a death projector, which Sivana fired up, hoping it would destroy most of Earth's population, making him ruler of the world. Marvel smashed their machine and took the Sivanas to jail, but they all shared a laugh over how happy they were to be a live and out of suspended animation.

(Shazam! I #4) - April 1st rolled around, and Billy Batson was depressed because he hadn't celebrated his birthday in decades, and after being gone from Fawcett so long he thought nobody remembered it was his birthday. Billy returned home, where all his friends, including Uncle Dudley threw him a surprise birthday party.

(Shazam! I #11) - Billy Batson, Mary and Freddy attended Sterling Morris’ Christmas Eve party along with all of their friends, including Beautia Sivana, Joan Jameson, the Potters, Sunny Sparkle, Mr. Tawky-Tawny and Uncle Dudley. The Sivana Family groused in their lab about how much they hated Christmas, and Sivana activated his Cosmic Clock, speeding up time so Christmas day would only last 10 minutes. The Marvel Family went into action when they noticed time was speeding up around them, and they saved Santa Claus, who was having trouble controlling his sped up reindeer. Santa told them the Sivana Family were trying to ruin Christmas, so the Marvels flew to the Sivanas’ lab and made short work of them. Combining their strength the Marvels stopped the Cosmic clock and pushed its’ hands backwards so Christmas day could proceed at a normal rate. The Marvels visited the Sivanas in jail, and said they found an appropriate Christmas present, the first the Sivanas had ever gotten, for the family that proclaimed themselves the rightful rulers of the universe. The present turned out to be a book entitled The Universe, and the Marvels returned to Morris’ party to celebrate the holiday with their friends.

(DC Comics Presents #34) - Mr. Mind and Superman’s foe Mr. Mxyztplk teamed up to bedevil their foes, resulting in Superman trapped on Earth-S. Captain Marvel put Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel and Uncle Dudley in charge of NYC while he tried to remedy the problem by visiting the Rock of Eternity. Mr. Mind enlisted King Kull in his schemes, and he attacked the U.N. The Marvel Family responded, and Uncle Marvel claimed his Shazambago was acting up, so Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary played along and flew him to the U.N. They were soundly defeated because Mxyztplk set up a magic lightning rod that transferred the power of Shazam bolts to Kull. Mr. Mind wanted to kill Superman and Captain Marvel, but Mxyztplk only wanted to commit pranks, not murder, so he withdrew his support and undid his magic. He summoned Hoppy the Marvel Bunny from the funny animal dimension, and he handily beat Kull, who’d been depowered.
