This is an interview with Steve Tucker,
Morbid Angel's bassist/vocalist.
Taken by Helldusk for Metal Vision Zine
on September 14, 2000.
Helldusk: Morbid Angel is a cult Death Metal band, and
I think there's no reason to
ask you about the biography of a band, Steve. Could you
please tell me about
how you joined the band?
Tucker: Through mutual friends, I got Trey's phone number
and we talked for hours on things
such as beliefs systems, spirituality , goals etc... Then I sent a tape which he liked,
and he asked
me to come to Florida to try out, at which time I met Peter and the three of us played
together for
about 3-4 days, then I went home and Trey called me up and said he thought I was what they
were
looking for, did I want the job, the rest, as they say is history...
Helldusk: Tell me about your forthcoming release? Are
you finished the recording
yet? Where and with what producer do you work?
Tucker: Yeah, the recording has been done since the
begginning of July, we worked with Jim Morris,
and I think he did an amazing job!!!
Helldusk: The lyrics still are the philosophic thoughts of Trey Azagthoth?
Tucker: The lyrics still maintain the Morbid Angel
Ideology, though I wrote 8 of the 9 songs lyrics....
Trey and I share a lot of the same philosophy, though my
writing style is a bit different than his......
Helldusk: Are the music still brutal as fuck?
Tucker: It is Morbid Angel!!! I think you will know this
from the second it starts...... I think it is very
brutal and dark!!
Helldusk: Could you please tell me how old are the
members of the band? The line-up
of Morbid Angel still the same?
Tucker: I am 29 and so is Rutan, to be honest, I have
never asked Trey or Pete their ages, man,
never thought to........ Since FFF Erik Rutan is back as a fulltime member of the
band.
Helldusk: What do you know about Russia? Have you heard any bands from there?
Tucker: To be honest, I know very little about Russia,
besides the propaganda they taught when I was
in school which is very outdated!!! And no, I am sorry to say I know of no Russian bands.
Helldusk: You guys are very popular here, and you are one
of my favourite bands
ever. So do you want Morbid Angel to visit Russia with
concerts?
Tucker: Yes, I definately want to visit Russia!!! Russia
was to me a very interesting place when I was
young, very intimidating due to all of the Cold War shite!!! And I think it would be
interesting to see it!!!!!
Helldusk: What do you think about the older Morbid
Angel releases?
Tucker: I love 'Altars of Madness', 'Blessed are the Sick'
and 'Covenant'!!!!
Helldusk: From your videos I only know
"Rapture" and "Where the Slime Live".
There are many M.A. bootlegs of live gigs, maybe
you have an official video or
something, besides the video-clips?
Tucker: No we don't. Hopefully we will do a proffesional live video very soon!!
Helldusk: What bands influenced on M.A. music? What're
your personal music tastes?
Of the rest of band's members?
Tucker: Man, I can only speak for myself really, I was influenced by Iron Maiden, Slayer, Dio, Black Sabbath.
Helldusk: Metal Scene nowadays... Black Metal is a
dominating style, but I think
Death Metal bands now had risen again. What do you think
about it?
Tucker: Well it seems to me that the seperation of the two
has actually gone away and they have become
one big genre!!! And it is very strong!!!
Helldusk: In what countries have you played?
Tucker: HAHAHA man, too many to name and or remember!!!!
Helldusk: Who are drawing your covers? Who actually is
an author of Morbid Angel's
logo?
Tucker: I do believe Trey designed the logo years ago!!!
Dan Seagrave is doing the cover for Gateways,
he also did Altars of Madness!!
Helldusk: Drugs, alcohol...?
Tucker: Sure, thanks!!!
Helldusk: Steve, in what band have you played earlier? Tell me more about the band.
Tucker: I played in a band named Ceremony and there is
nothing of relavance to say except Pat O'Brien
from Cannibal Corpse also played in the band...
Helldusk: What do you know about Dave Vincent, band ex-frontman? Is he playing somewhere?
Tucker: He is in a band with his wife, The Genetorturers
Helldusk: Are you rehearsing often?
Tucker: Yes we play a lot, when we are getting ready to
tour or record we will play 5-6 days a week
up to 6 hours a day.
Helldusk: Your final words to our readers?
Tucker: Stay true, we hope to get to Russia for this record!!! Thanks.
