Here's a few from Karla Cook:
Cedric: "I wished I loved to smoke. I think I could enjoy smoking if it didn't make me so sick."
Abner: "Them's the two-talkin'est one people...er...I mean, the one-tallkin'est two people....er...what DO I mean?"
(Cedric comes in to deliever a telegram) Abner: "Cedric, did you want some peanut butter?" Cedric: "No, mom, I came to deliver this telegram". (After a few minutes) Cedric: "I wonder if I DID want some peanut butter?"

When you listen to Lum and Abner, what are you picturing in your mind? Are they in the jot'em down store...if so...where are they? Are they behind the counter, in the feed room, on the porch, at the telephone, or at the checkerboard? What are they wearing? Does Lum have on his sleeve garders, is Abner wearing a hat, are they in their sunday blue surge suits? And most important of all the questions above....when you imagine Lum and Abner....ARE THEY IN COLOR OR BLACK AND WHITE??? Email your thoughts on this subject to me RanEStone@aol.com and I'll post them for all the fans to see. Be sure to put Lum and Abner in the subject line of the email so I don't delete it thinking it is junk mail!
Here's my response:
"Well, I had the opportunity to write my views on the subject first, so here goes. My mental image of Lum is with a black vest on, with those sleeve garders on his elbows and with no hat. Abner usually has on a black sports like jacket on, with a cowboy like tie around his neck. I imagine the boys at the checker board near the telephone. When ever the phone rings, it is usually Lum who answers it because Abner is usually too busy thinking about his next move. As soon as Lum answers the phone, ready to "jot down" one of Widder Abnernathy's orders. But, right as soon as he says "yes mum" to the Widder's first item, here comes old Abner nagging at Lum to make his next move. And the answer to the "most important" question....I just about always imagine Lum and Anber in black and white. I guess this comes from watching their movies. I listened to their programs for about a year before I ever saw them in a movie or a picture, and even then I had a black and white image of them in my head."
Who would you be???
If you were a character from the show, who would you be?? Would you be Lum, Abner, Cedric, Sister Simpson, or any other Pine Ridger? Why would you be this person?? Email me your thoughts on why you would be this character and I'll post it for all fans like you to see. (Remember to put L&A character in the subject so I don't delete it!) Remember ANY of the people from the show could be used as an example, fictional or real. Here's a few:
Ken Weigel says:
"Lum is who I'd wanna be. He's got
a nice voice & he gits to feel superior.
He gits to 'splain things to Abner that Abner don't pick up on because
Abner's jest a mite slow. 'sides, Abner jest don't have the world
experience Lum has. Then when Lum's done tellin' Abner how this or that
works, or how somethin's properly done this a'way instead o' that a'way, he
goes out & does somethin' really dumb hisself jest to prove that, no matter
how much smarter'n Abner he is, he's still 28 times dumber'n you & me tunin'
in."
Karla Cook says:
"Well, let's see... seein's how I'm a
"worman"... I guess I orta pick a
"feminine-female" character to be, ya reckon? I think I'd like to be
Miss Emmaline, the schoolteacher. I have always enjoyed teaching and I
home-school my children, so that seems like a logical choice. And just
think how excitin' it would be to have Lum courtin' me, and makin'
sheep-eyes at me, and tryin' to buy my pie at the pie supper and all
sech as that!!! Besides, I wouldn't have a speaking part, so I could
just sit back and listen to Lum and Abner and all their friends carryin'
on!"
Macon Ballard says:
If I could be a Pine Ridger, I think I'd be Grandpappy Spears. He's the grand ole pigeon-toed man about town who's always reading that knock-kneed almanac to any flat-footed body that will take a bow-legged minute to listen. Then I'd whup ole spavin-legged Abner in a game of checkers. Yep, I'd have to say ole Grandpap is my hero. Sides all that, he's the brainest philosopher in town.
Wally Depew says:
For me, it's easy. I'd be Cedric. He's a
wonderful character who gets great
lines, has fun with almost everything he does and gets to hang out and play
pinball a lot.
