B Frank Pyatt and May F Haley

Benjamin Franklin 'Frank' Pyatt was born in Missouri February 5, 1854 and died May 18, 1920, at #1301 S Boyle Avenue, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, of apoplexy. He was the son of Elisha F and Francis Bohle Pyeatt and was born in Missouri. He married c1907 (probably in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri), May Haley (or Hadley) who was born May 11, 1856, in Michigan to Thos J Haley and who died March 28, 1913 at 4223a Blaine Avenue, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri of pneumonia. This was May's third marriage and her name was Hull when she and Frank were married. Frank and May are buried in the Valhalla Cemetery, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.

On the 1860 census Frank appeared with the Elisha and Francis Pyatt family as 'B F Pyeatt' age 6. On the 1870 census he was 'Franklin' age 16. On the 1880 census he was 'Ben F Pyeatt' age 25.

The children of Frank and May F Pyatt:

This birth record found at the Missouri database of births and deaths appears to be for daughter, Lillian.

On the 1900 census, I find Frank living with Mamie Null in St Louis, St Louis County, Missouri as follows:

This family was enumerated #3959 Sharpy Avenue. I find it suspicious that there is a boy named Harry born October 1885 living in this household when Frank had a nephew named Harry born October 1885 who later lived at the same address as Frank on the 1920 census.

By the 1910 census Frank appears to have married and appears as follows in St Louis, St Louis County, Missouri:

  • Pyatt, Benjamin ?T/F age 57 born MO / married1 for 3 years / Laborer Plaining Mill / Rents Home
  • Pyatt, May F (wife) age 54 born MI / married3 for 3 years / 7 children/6 living / father born KY/mother born VT
  • Pyatt, Benjamin T (son) age 10 born MO / single / father born MO/mother born MI
  • Pyatt, Lillie M (daughter) age 8 born MO / single / father born MO/mother born MI

This family was enumerated ?/277 at 1553 Tower Grove Avenue. It appears that Frank has married the widow he was living with in 1900 and that the nine month old child she had at that time was Frank's. They apparently then married and had one more child together. I say this because her child was only 9 months old on the 1900 census and yet her last known child before that was 14 years previous. Also, the age of 'Frank' from the 1900 census agrees with 'Benjamin T' on the 1910 census. Since Frank was single on the 1900 census (and the 1910 shows this as his first marriage), these could not be his children from a previous marriage. So, unless they were May F's children who had taken the Pyatt name; they were Frank's natural children. I think that the reason May named a second son Frank was to broadcast his tie to his father. 'Mamie' age 44 in 1900 seems to be the same as 'May F' age 54 in 1910 with the same birthplace, number of children, etc. They had been married for three years so c1907 in St Louis, St Louis County, Missouri. This was Mary's third marriage.

May's death certificate appears as follows:
Death Certificate #11673 City: St Louis 4223a Blaine Av, 25 Ward; Registration District: 791; Primary Registration District: 1003; Registered No: 3110; Full Name: May Pyeatt; Sex: Female; Race: white; Marital status: Married; Date of birth: May 11, 1856 Age: 56 yrs 10 mos 17 ds; Occupation: Housework / At Home; Birthplace: Michigan; Name of Father: Thos J Haley; Birthplace of Father: Michigan; Maiden name of Mother: No Record; Birthplace of Mother: No Record; Informant and address: Thomas J Paris, 4223a Blaine Av; Filed: MAR 31 1913 Max C Starkloff; Date of Death: March 28, 1913; Attended from/to: Mch 18, 1913 to Mch 28, 1913 that I last saw her alive on Mch 28, 1913 at 3:30 pm; Cause of Death and duration: Pneumonia Lobar, 10 ds; Contributory and duration: La ?Goeffe, 14 ds; Physician and address: ?Wantone Hall M.D. Mch 29, 1913 1595 Tower Grove; Place of burial or removal: Valhalla Cemetery; Date of burial: Mch 31, 1913; Undertaker: Geo. Who is Thomas J Paris?

I find Frank on the 1920 census as follows:

The Lanhams enumerated district 188 #1303/253/485 Boyle Avenue; Frank at #1301; and the Harry Pyatt family at #1307 (all on the same property apparently) 118/188/17/4 (Ancestry.com image 33/41). This is the same address (#1307) where Elisha Pyatt and one of his sons died and where different family members lived over the years (at both #1307 and #1309 Boyle). Most recently, on the 1910 census, the 1307 Boyle Avenue address was where Jacob and Isabella Pyeatt had lived. At that time, their son, Harry, was 24 years old. This would appear to be he and his wife and family still living in the same house with his uncle (his mother's brother) living nearby. Also enumerated on the previous page at #1301 was Myra Devine - Frank's sister. Where were Frank's children?

Note that Mona's maiden name was given as Ware. Was this a mistake on Ben's part since she married him as a Ware? If she was born a Ware why would her daughter, Carmen, have the Ware name?
