Charles E and Mary A ? Pyatt

Charles Elijah Pyatt was born in September 1865 in Missouri. He was the son of James G and Rachel Miller Pyatt. Charles was married c1886 to Mary A (or E) Barton who was born in April 1869 in Missouri.

Charles is said to have had 14 children:

Carol has information on the Charles E Pyatt line. Although, nothing is known about any of these other children except Arno though a sibling named Omar Pyatt and his wife Gladys were known to own property in Arkansas and had one daughter, Evelyn (Smith). According to Carlene, there was another child, Rube who had one daughter. She further adds that Modicia had a twin named Mary who was stillborn or died in infancy and Carlene's father, Carl, (next to youngest child) had four daughters.

Charles was with his parents in Dent County, Missouri on the 1880 census and since the 1890 census is destroyed, we first find Charles and family as follows on the 1900 census of Casto Township, Shannon County, Missouri:

This family was enumerated at 106/114/6/67. Is John Barton a relative of Mary?

By the 1910 census they were in Casto Township, Shannon County, Missouri:

This family was enumerated #45/45 (Ancestry.com image 5/12). The writing was very difficult to read. The 2nd child was especially challenging - although even 'Charles' was hard to read. The 'Schela' name was very clear - but doesn't make any sense. Mary says that she has 9 children living out of twelve. The oldest daughter, Gertrude, is not with the family. Counting her and the children above - we see all nine of the children still living. I assume Gertrude was married and living nearby - though I did not spot her. Some of these names that do not match up with the list of children might be the same child going by a nickname. Also living in Casto Township was Charles' nephew, Chester E Pyatt.

They were still in Casto Township on the 1920 census :

This family was enumerated 82/96/9/65 (ancestry image 1034). The writing was clearer on this enumeration. But, the spelling of names is still a little odd. We see the addition of 'Carroll' who is 8 and Omar T age 7.

By the 1930 census of Casto Townhip, the remaining family members were as follows:

This family enumerated #102/102 on Salem Road. In the next household was a female that might be their daughter, Gertrude, born c1888.

The age and place of parent's birth do not match up for this Gertrude. But, it's a possibility that should be investigated. In Charles' household, the 'Carroll R' from 1920 is now 'Ralph E' and 'Omar T' from 1920 is now 'Homer T'. The names 'Rube' and 'Carl' from the family listing never appear and I assume they are one of the children already identified on the census. I will leave the listing as it is until this can be resolved. Probably some of the children of Charles and Mary lived and died between enumerations and were never seen. Was 'Rube' the Evelyn Ruby Pyatt daughter of Omar T Pyatt? I need to check the 1920 census to see who had a 1 year old named Elberta B who was the grandson enumerated with Charles and Mary in 1930.

Cleo's obituary appeared in the Houston Herald, Texas County, Missouri, as follows:
Cleo Pyatt Afre, 66, daughter of the late Charles D. Pyatt and Hattie Cleo Riley Pyatt, was born Sept. 2, 1937, at Summersville. She died Jan. 6, 2004, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital at Weston, Fla. She attended Summersville High School and graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. She attended many of the alumni gatherings, often getting the award for the one who traveled the farthest. She married Jose Luis Afre Oct. 25, 1956. They were married 26 years before his death in 1982. Mrs. Afre lived in Guatemala 47 years, founding one of the most prestigious secretarial schools and helping others in different areas. More than 2,000 students graduated from the school. The government of Guatemala awarded Mrs. Afre the "Orden del Quetzal", the highest award in that country. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, June Henry; and two brothers, Jim and Bert Pyatt. Surviving are her children, Steve Afre, Diane Aquino and Anthony Afre; and three grandchildren. Services were Jan. 10 at the Bradford Funeral Home Chapel in Summersville with burial in the Riley Cemetery near Summersville.
