The children of Samuel and Jane Green:
Jefferson County, MO Deed F303: Last Will and Testament of James Green:
Recorded 7 February, 1843
Be in remembered that on this twentieth day of March, 1842 I, James Green of Merimack Township, County of Jefferson and State of Missouri, do make my last will and testimony.
I will to my son Samuel Green one dollar.
To my son Joseph P. Green, (I will) the land on which he now lives, also one bed and bedding.
To my son, James L. Green I will the land which I now live on , one wagon and one yoke of oxen and one horse, two sheep, one cow, one bed and bedding, and all the farming utensils. The quantity of land is one hundred and twenty acres.
To my son-in-law James Shoults I will one dollar.
To my son-in-law Louis Shoults I will one Dollar.
To my son-in-law Peter L. Shoults I will one dollar.
To my son-in-law Louis C. Williams (listed in other docs as Wilson) I will one dollar.
To my son-in-law James McMennes I will forty dollars in property.
To my wife Mary I will the balance of my property and the third part of the land and produce thereof after all just debts are paid (for) as long as she lives. At her (should be "my"?) decease she is to dispose of her part of the moveable property as she pleases. Done in presence of Issac Woods, Jane Woods.
This Samuel Green is assumed to be the same as the husband of Jane Pyeatt Green based on the following:
Jefferson County, MO Deed Book H page 176: Joseph Green and James Green pay $250 to the "heirs and legators of deceased James Green" then names Samuel Green & Jane, his wife; Louis Shoults & Polly, his wife; Peter Shoults & Jemima, his wife; James McMeins & Elizabeth, his wife; Lewis C. Wilson & Ruth, his wife."
From these two documents, we also learn that Samuel had brothers, Joseph P and James L Green. He had sisters Polly Shoults (married to Louis), Jemima Shoults (married to Peter), Elizabeth McMeins (married to James) and Ruth Williams or Wilson (married to Lewis C).
Samuel and family appeared as follows on the 1850 census of St. Louis County, Missouri, Merrimack Township:
The 'St. Louis, Missouri Citizen's Directory & Business Mirror' for 1859 listed:
I couldn't find a Samuel or Jane Green in any 'familiar' counties in 1860 or 1870 indexes. In 1860 there was a John Green in the index who was in Jefferson County, Merrimack Township pg 641 {I cannot locate on Ancestry.com}. However, no other of Samuel's children appear in the index and this could be a different John Green. A search of the 1860 census index at Ancestry.com for all states for Samuel Green turned up no matches who were born in c1809 or Jane Green born c1820. There were no Benjamin Greens age 29-32 born Missouri for any state. There was one 27-year-old Andrew Green in Marion County, MO, but he was colored. The only John Green age 23 was in Clay Co, MO, but his middle initial is 'R'.
I performed many searches of the 1880 census at familysearch.org. I searched the US for S/Samuel Green (all spellings on all of these names) born in Missouri in 1809 (+-5 years) - no matches found. I searched the US for Jane Green born in Missouri in 1820 (+-5 years) - no matches found. I searched the US for John Green born in Missouri in 1837 (+-2 years) - there were 2 possible matches. One was in Red Bluff, Tehama Co, CA (all persons born MO) and the other was in Crooked River, Ray Co, Missouri (mother born MO/father born KY). I searched the US for Benjamin Green born in Missouri in 1839 (+-2 years) - 2 matches. In Indian Creek, Monroe Co, MO, the father and mother were born KY; in Bozeman, Gallatin Co, MT, both parents were born KY. I searched the US for R/Rufus/Rufia Green born in Missouri in 1841 (+-5 years) - no matches. I searched the US for Andrew Green born in Missouri in 1843 (+-2 years) with no matches.
