James Andrew Piatt and Catharine Bryden

James Andrew Piatt Jr was born 18212 in Indiana the third son born to James Andrew Piatt and Jemima Ford Piatt and died 1873 (of a brain fever, probably in Monticello, Piatt County, Illinois).

James was eight when his family moved to Illinois with his parents. Piatt County, Illinois was named for his father.

James married January 17, 1849, in Piatt County, Illinois, to Catharine Bryden who was born c1826 in Nova Scotia (later referred to as Scotland) and who died in 1893. James and Catherine moved to California in 1852.

The known child of James and Catharine was:

James' family appeared on the 1850 census of Monticello (or West Side of Sangamon River), Piatt County, Illinois:

This family was enumerated #2210/2262. Many of James' relatives lived in various neighboring households including his father's widow, Mahala; his sister, Anna A Piatt Strickler, with their sibling, Jacob Piatt; his brother, Wiliam H Piatt; and his brother, John Piatt.

The family appeared on the 1860 census of Piatt County, Illinois, having apparently returned from California:

I also have a rough census abstract from Piatt County, Illinois, for the 1870 census:

  • Piatt, James age 49
  • Piatt, Catherine age 45
  • Piatt, Alice age 20
  • Piatt, Hampton age 19

I only have one child listed for James and Catherine. Is Hampton a son or some other relation?

James had died by the 1880 census and Catharine appeared with their daughter and her family as follows:

This abstract was taken from familysearch.org; page 260D. Also on that page was James' brother, John Piatt, and family.
