Mary was born July 5, 1872, (some sources have July 5, 1873) in Austin, Travis County, Texas and died August 12, 1958, in Evan's Rest Home in Glendale, Maricopa County, Arizona where she had lived for 3 years. She was the daughter of Martin and L January. Mary was buried in the Resthaven Park Cemetery, Glendale, Arizona. Her obituary appeared in the Phoexiz Gazette pg 7 issue of 14 Aug 1958. Does anyone have a full text of that obituary?
According to her death certificate, Mollie's usual residence was 2411 No. 31st Street in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. Andrew Pyeatt was the informant. He did not know her father's first name or the name of her mother. She had lived in Arizona for 72 years.
The children of James and Mary:
According to Jean Clarke, the following appears about James and Mary in the Rim Country book. "James Benton, better known as "Ben" and Mary Ellen, known as "Mollie". Ben and Mollie built their cabin under the lofty Mogollon Rim. In 1889 the Pyeatt School was opened and was named after the Ben Pyeatt family. The school was near their home at the head of a draw - that draw now appears on the map as Pyeatt Draw. By 1891 the school enrolled eight children. Ben bought a place in Gisela, AZ, in 1891 and lived there until 1894. From there they lived in different areas around Arizona.
Mary and her daughter Minnie appeared as follows on the 1910 census in Payson Precinct, Gila County, Arizona, as follows:
They were enumerated ED 27 #2/2 East Yards Road May 1910; ancestry pg 5/29; neighbors were #1 Emanda Gladdin, #3 Jas Solomon, #4 Benjamin Butter (entire page)). I do not think that any of Mary's children were deceased. So, I don't know if the '4 children living' is a mistake or a misread number. According to James Benton Pyeatt's 1948 obituary, all the children were still living then.
Mary's son, Andrew, appeared on the next census page as follows:
James' obituary appeared as follows in the "The Arizona Republic" issue of
