James G and Mary C Smith Pyatt

James Glass Pyatt Jr. was born November 21, 1854 in Crawford County, Missouri, to James Glass Piatt and Rachel Miller and died October 26, 1914 in Franklin, Gladden Township, Dent County, Missouri. I was told that he was buried in the Empire Cemetery south of Salem in Dent County, Missouri. His death certificate says that he was buried in the 'Gladden Cemetery' in Dent County, Missouri. His daughter, Rachel, is also listed on her death certificate as 'Gladden' burial. However, as I find no Gladden Cemetery in Dent County they are most likely one and the same. I would be interested to know if he has a headstone.

James grew up in Crawford County, Missouri, near his father's extended family. His mother died between 1866 and 1869 at which time James gained a step-mother, Mary A(nn) Honeycutt, who provided James with seven half-siblings.

James was married c1885 to Mary Catherine Smith who was born on November 3, 1854 (or November 1855) in Dent County, Missouri, to James Smith and Mary Kyle who were from Tennessee. Mary died of influenze May 8, 1931, and is buried in the Jadwin Cemetery, Dent County, Missouri. At some point before his death, it appears that James and Catherine were not living together as husband and wife. In fact, he is enumerated as 'divorced' on the 1910 census. However, his death certificate lists 'married' and Catherine's lists 'widowed' on hers (she died after James). So, I think they weren't legally divorced, just not living together.

The known children of James and Mary:

James had moved on to Franklin Township, Dent County, Missouri, on the 1880 census as follows:

From familysearch.org - I did not view this original entry. Also in Franklin Township was James' father and step-mother with thier children and his brothers, Samuel Pleasant Pyatt and William Caleb Pyatt.

Of note, descendants of Benjamin Piatt, the brother of James Glass Pyeatt also lived in Dent County, Missouri.

On the 1900 census of District 12, Franklin Township, Dent County, Missouri, James and family appeared as follows:

This family was enumerated 29/12/8/55. Living in Franklin Township nearby was James' brother, William Caleb Pyatt, who also had their father in his household. By this time, their brother, Samuel P Pyatt, had moved to Newton Township, Shannon County, Missouri.

James (or his father) appears to have bought the following property in Dent County, Missouri:

By the 1910 census of District 25, Gladden Valley Township, Dent County, Missouri, James appears to have divorced Mary (or she him):

This family was enumerated #25/25 (Ancestry.com image 3/13). Very faded writing makes it almost impossible to read. Also in District 25 at #55/55 (Ancestry.com image 6/13) with the Givens family were:

Since she is single, this lady was born a Pyatt. James' daughter, Clercy, would have been about this age and would have said MO and TN for parent's birth places. Surprisingly, I found these two by searching for the divorced Mary Smith Pyatt using her first name and year and place of birth in Dent County. The 'matching' Mary Moffit age 54 was widowed and does not appear to be a match though she is on the same page as the Pyatts above. I have the following listing, but, do not have the entire abstract of the family from Ancestry.com as I could not locate her searching with this information. It must have been read differently by the person transcribing it from this index versus the Ancestry.com transcriber. According to the soundex card, in Spring Creek Township, Dent County, Missouri:

I wonder who Brice Smith is?

The following family appeared on the 1920 census and appears to be Catherine with two of her sons in Gladden Township, Dent County, Missouri:

This family was enumerated #31/31/4/9 (ancestry image 49). The age of Catherine seems to agree with the 'missing' Catherine from the 1910 census. Also, 'Wilton' seems to be the Charles W Pyatt and 'Wesley J' the 'James W' based on their ages. Also, Wilton's death certificate lists his parents as James and Catherine Smith Pyatt. I would like to find this family on the 1930 census.

I found the following death certificate of a son of James and Catherine. The birth year does not agree with either of their known sons from various census records. However, the son, Charles W, was born in December as was this 'Wilton'. Perhaps his wife had his year of birth wrong? Who is Jack Asbridge who was the informant? What other possible family could 'Wilton' belong to if not this one?:
