James J Piatt and Ellen Barney
James J Piatt was born c1836 in Pennsylvania. He married Ellen Barney who was born c1830 (or 1838) in Pennsylvania.
and had the following known children:
- George Piatt b: c1857
- Robert Piatt b: c1859
- Sarah Mildred "Millie" Piatt b: c1860
- Charles Piatt b: c1865
- Ulysses Piatt b: c1870
We first find this couple before they were married living near each other in Huntington Twp, Luzerne Co, PA, on the 1850 federal census (as follows:)
- Barney, John age 52
- Barney, Sarah age 41
- Barney, Charles age 20
- Barney, Elizabeth age 17
- Barney, Ellen age 11
- Barney, Mary age 6
- Barney, John age 3
- Jonas Hoyt 29 M Farmer
- Sarah Hoyt 25 F
- Adelia Hoyt 2 F
- Sylvivia Hoyt 1 F
- James Piatt 16 M Farmer
- Oliver Sharps 12 M
This family was on page 312 and the Barney family was on page 279. The age of Ellen Barney of 11 would give her a c1839 birthyear which is close to the 1838 birthyear given on her death certificate. The birth year for this James of c1834 matches the James and Ellen Piatt family found on the 1870 census of Plymouth Township, Luzerne Co, PA, as follows:
- Piatt, James 36 M W Carpenter $100 PA
- Piatt, Ellen 30 F W Keepinghouse. PA
- Piatt, George E 13 M W PA
- Piatt, Robert R 11 M W PA
- Piatt, Sarah P 10 F W PA
- Piatt, Charles W 5 M W PA
James and Ellen purchased property 10/20/1870. Ellen finally got a
clear deed for herself on October 22, 1872 after the death of James on April 11, 1872. Ellen then sold the property on October 9, 1876.
J. W. Eno was appointed the guardian of the children March 25, 1876, namely, George, Robert, Sarah, Charles and Ulysses. We find Ellen and family again on the 1880 census 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Ward, Plymouth, Luzerne, Pennsylvania 424C as follows:
- M. C Loudan M M W 29 PA
- Ellen Loudan Wife F M W 38 PA
- Millie Pyatt Dau F M W 18 PA
- Chas Pyatt Son M S W 14 PA
- Ulyssis Pyatt Son M S W 10 PA
- Carrie Pyatt Dau F S W 1 PA
The children match those of James and Ellen Barney Piatt with the exception of Ellen Pyatt who would have been born after the death of James. Could she have been a daughter of Millie's? Was she the daughter of Ellen with Moses Cummings Louden or someone else? It appears that she went by Loudan later in her life.
According to Dick Piatt who interviewed several descendants of James Piatt in the 1960's, "Elizabeth (Piatt) Kittle told me there was an Isaac Piatt that was in the family and she thought it was a brother to
the above James, but she could not clearly remember the facts. To this day, I have not been able to prove or disprove this fact. The name Isaac
certainly was in the family with James grandfather, Ephraim.
