John and Hannah ?Daniel Pyatt
John Pyatt was born c1782 in Viginia and died between 1860 and 1870 in Tennessee. He was married to Hannah ?Daniel of Virginia. John's parentage has not yet been conclusively proven, however, with John Pyatt naming a daughter Hester, it could possibly connect this family to the John and Deborah Pyott of Loudoun County, Virginia. Also connected here was a Hester Piott married to a Nathan Dyke. Since Virginia was not a state until 1788, would John have named the place which later became Virginia? Virginia is not an option on the 1790 index search at Ancestry.com leading me to believe that no census was performed.
John and Hannah had the following known children:
- female Pyatt b: c1810-1815 TN
- female Pyatt b: c1810-1815 TN
- female Pyatt b: c1810-1815 TN
- Fleming Sanders Pyatt b: 4 Apr 1818 TN m: Susan Kidwell b: c1822 TN (d/o Rev. John Kidwell)
- Katherine Pyatt b: c1815-1820 TN (or Katherine was one of the daughters born 1810-1815) m: 11 Nov 1846
- John Pyatt b: c1821 TN m: 15 Dec 1849 Ibba/Ibby Brooks b: c1824 TN
- Lida Elizabeth Pyatt b: c1825 TN d: TN (never married)
- Hester Ann Pyatt b: c1829 TN d: TN (never married)
According to Beverly Asselstine, her mother knew the last two as Nathaniel Piott called them - "Aunt Lid and Aunt Het".
I do not have an abstract from the 1810 census (only Rutherford County appears to be available - where are the others?). But, according to an abstract on the usgenweb, on page 19 is Abigail Brown, John Mays, James Greenlea, Henry Mays, Isaac Mitchell, John Piot, James Bryant, Polly Ivey, Zera Magee, (pg 20) Frances Solomon, Adam Coose, George Noe, Jacob Noe, and David Counts.
In 1820 there doesn't appear to be a Grainger County on the census index at Ancestry.com although this county was formed at that time.
I first find John on the census for 1830 census in Grainger County, Tennessee, as follows:
- John Piott 1m5-10; 1m10-15; 1m50-60 / 1f<5; 1f5-10; 1f10-15; 3f15-20; 1f30-40 / 10 total
This family was enumerated pg 395 image 85/118. After a fairly alphabetized list of heads of household, John appears in a group of apparently unalphabetized individuals as follows: James Boyd, John Ivey, John Piott, John Ramsey, John Kidwell, David Kidwell, Marmadick Jeffreys, Joshua Kidwell, Benjamin Ivey, Henry Ivey Senr, John Hixon, Elijah Sims, John Daniel, and James Daniel (also Joseph Daniel on pg 396). Wouldn't John have been 48 years old on this census (age 40-50)? Besides the two sons identified through other records as Fleming Sanders Pyatt and John Pyatt, there were six girls (presumably children of John and Hannah). We know that the two youngest are Lida and Hester. It is also said that there was a daughter Katherine married in 1846. Therefore, I would guess that she was the one age 10-15 in 1830. That leaves the three oldest as unidentified. The female 30-40 is Hannah.
John can be found on the 1840 census in the Eastern District, Grainger County, Tennessee;
- John Piott 1m15-20; 1m20-30; 1m40-50 / 1f10-15; 1f15-20; 2f20-30; 1f40-50 / 8 total / 1 in agriculture
This family was enumerated pg 120 image 62/107. Their neighbors were G B Mayes, William Ramsey, John Ramsey, Thos Ivey, John Kidwell, *, James Boyce, James Mathis, John Mathis. On pg 119 was Joseph Daniel age 50-60. If John were born 1782 he should be 56 on this enumeration. Why is he listed as 40-50? Was he just put in the wrong column? The two other males are sons Fleming and John. Hester and Lida are the two youngest daughters and one of the two females 20 to 30 is probably Katherine. The female 40 to 50 is Hannah.
In Grainger County Wills Nov 1833 - May 1852 appears the abstract of Joseph Daniel 4 Jan 1842. On his deathbed he mentions his wife, Polly
Daniel and his children (not named). It was signed by John Piott and M. N. Jefferes. It was recorded 15 Apr 1842, by E. Tate Clerk. This has led to speculation that John's wife, Hannah, was a Daniel. The age of this Joseph is such that he could possibly be Hannah's father if he is at the upper age of the ranges, but, is not conclusive.
John and family appeared on the 1850 census of Jefferson County, Tennessee:
Piett, John age 68 born VA / Laborer
Piett, Hanah age 62 born VA
Piett, Lidia age 25 born TN / cannot read/write
Piett, Hester Ann age 21 born TN / cannot read/write
This family was enumerated on page 378. John and Hannah's sons, Flemming and John, were in Grainger County, Tennessee with their families. Where was Katherine and the other Pyatt daughters?
John is said to have died after the 1860 census, though I have not find him using various searches for John, Hannah, Lydia/Lida or Hester on that census. Since I know that Hester and Lida were living in 1860, I'm sure the family is somewhere together and I am just not finding them. John's son, John Pyatt, was in Jefferson County, Tennessee, and his son, Fleming, was in Grainger County, Tennessee at this time.
Lida and Hester appear near their brother, Fleming, on the 1870 and 1880 census.
