John's father left Pennsylvania c1836 for Palmyra, Marion County, Missouri, where he received a land patent in 1838 and remained many years. When the family moved to Morgan County, Illinois, John went with them. He was married in Morgan County, Illinois, September 23, 1846, to Caroline Smedley.

They were enumberated #56/57 pg 174 Jacksonville. At #57/58 were John's parents. On pg 176D at #95/94 was John's brother, Benjamin Pyatt with his family and their brother, Oliver Pyatt, lived with their sister, Emily Pyatt Cassell and her husband, Peter Cassell, family on pg 170C.
On the 1860 census, in the city of Jacksonville, Morgon County, Illinois, we find:
Their family was enumerated #304/304 8th Jun 1860 pg 367 (top left pg 45; ancestry image 45/563). Their neighbors were #298 George ?Pfraniger, #299 William L Butler, #300 William G Johnson, #301 Joseph ?Flory, #302 E Y Miller, #303 unoccupied, #305 unoccupied, #306 C K Sawyer/Lawyer, #307 John Burns, #308 Thomas C Rout, #309 I N Martin. At #623 pg 412 were John's parents with his brother, Oliver. By this time, John's brother, Benjamin, had moved to Sangamon County, Illinois. Their sister, Emily Pyatt Cassell was in Indian Creek, Emerald Point P O, in Morgan County.
