Jacob and Mary Ann Piatt

Jacob Piatt was born c1800 in to Benjamin and Mary 'Polly' Waddell Piatt. There are some differing opinions of the biography of Benjamin's father, Benjamin Sr. However, a sketch that appeared in "A History of Adams Co OH," by Nelson W Evans & Emmons B Stivers (1900), pp 331 & 336 gives: "Benjamin Piatt was born in 1763 in Virginia. He came to Adams County in 1810, and bought land in Tiffin Township. He was a first lieutenant under General McCullough. He married Polly Waddle in Virginia, and was a pensioner. He died in 1851, at the age of ninety-eight [my note: Does not add - born 1753 if 98. MCP], and is buried near West Union, probably in the Trotter Cemetery. No stone marks his grave. He had a son, Benjamin, who was living in 1898, near West Union. A daughter, Margaret Denning, lived near Stone Chapel in 1898. He had six children, three sons and three daughters. His son Jacob married Polly Trotter. His son John married Hester Black. Benjamin married Myra Bayless. Margaret married Newton Denning. Elizabeth married Lewis Trotter. Polly married John Black."

Jacob married Mary Ann 'Polly' Trotter who was born c1810 in Ohio. Both are thought to be buried in Adams County, Ohio.

Jacob and Polly had the following known children:

Piatt families in Adams County, Ohio, on the 1840 census include: The male under five would be son, Jacob C Piatt; two males 5 to 10 would be sons James W Piatt and Benjamin Piatt; male 40-50 would be Jacob born c1800; the female under five would be daughter, Jane J Piatt; the female 20-30 years old would be wife Mary Trotter Piatt. This is probably the first 1840 census I've analyzed where everyone was present and accounted for with no additional males or females.

Jacob and Mary can be found on the 1850 census in Tiffin Township, Adams County, Ohio, as follows:

This family was enumerated 31 Aug 1850 #1530/1530 pg 152. Their neighbors were #1526 Oliver Thurs?, #1527 John McDermott, #1528 Sarah Math?, #1529 John L Trotter, #1531 Samuel & Lucinda ?, and #1532 John McPeters.

Also in Tiffin Township were Benjamin and Mary Piatt (Jacob's parents), Benjamin Piatt and family (brother), Lewis Piatt; and Hester Piatt (sister-in-law).

By the 1860 census of Tiffin Township, Adams County, Ohio:

This family was enumerated #855/861 pg 117 (ancestry.com image 35/45) 14 Jul 1860. Neighbors were #856 Eliza Blake, #857 Benjamin D Piatt (nephew), #858 William Phillips, and #859 Thomas McKitrick. Also in Tiffin Township were Robert and Ann Piatt and family, Hetty Piatt (sister-in-law) and family, and the Benjamin and Luvina Piatt family (Jacob's brother). Was the 'Nancy' on this census the 'Jane J' from the 1850 or did the son Jacob marry a Nancy who was living with this family? Jane J Piatt would have been old enough to be married herself and not in this household. I do not believe that marriage records of Adams County survive. Disproving that theory is the 'single' status listed for Jacob C Piatt on the 1880 census listed below.
