William McDowell was born in South Carolina about 1797, married 25 September 1837 in Montgomery County, Alabama to Jane Collins Robinson, and was said to have died about 1855 in Wayne County, Missouri. Jane Collins was born about 1815 in Tennessee, and died December 7, 1887, in Ripley County, Missouri, at "age 74 yrs., lacking six months and one day" according to her obituary in the December 16, 1887, "Prospect News". Their marriage record gives the name Robinson for Jane; however, family tradition says she had been married before and Collins was her actual maiden name. After William's death in 1855 (probably in Wayne County, Missouri, where headstones were rare before 1900's), Jane married c1856 probably Wayne County, Missouri, where records were burned in 1854, James Elgin McKinney a widower born c1812 who died Nov 1869. James is on the 1870 Mortality Schedule - cause of death: Typhoid Fever. He was married first to Mary Ann Clark who died between 1854 and 1856, probably in Wayne County, Missouri. Jane and James are said to be buried in unmarked graves in the Macedonia Cemetery, Ripley Co, MO.
William and Jane had the following children:
While in Montgomery County, Alabama, William McDowell received two land patents. One, on 01/21/1834 E1/2SW 8 14N 20E of 80 acres and on 08/15/1837 NENW 11 14N 20E 39.96 acres. Receiving land patents near by were Alexander McDowell and John D McDowell. Does anyone know if there is a relationship between these families? Also, William was said to have lived in Marshall County, Alabama, during the 1850 census. A man named Ganem M Waters owned land East and South of Paint Rock River in Madison/Marshall Counties near James Elgin McKinney who William's wife marries later in Ripley County. Were William McDowell and James Elgin McKinney neighbors on the Madison/Marshall County line and is Ganem M Waters related to the McDowell family? Also, is William related to the Hugh S McDowell who married in 1848 in Montgomery Co, Alabama, Elizabeth Johnson?
