George and Teressa Jane Pyeatt Davis Pepper

Teressa Jane Pyeatt was born c1845 in Jefferson County, Missouri, to Christopher and Nancy Votaw Pyeatt. She married first on October 16, 1863, in Jefferson County, Missouri, John R Davis.

Teressa married second April 26, 1866 (Bk 2:254; I'm not sure what county this references (probably Franklin Co, MO)) George Washington Pepper who was born c1839 in Missouri to John M and Lucinda Wilson Pepper. Lucinda Wilson was the daughter of John and Clarissa C. Wideman Wilson. Clarissa was the daughter of Francis Wideman who was a pioneer of Jefferson County, Missouri, along with Teressa's grandfather, John Pyeatt.

According to Pepper family information "Some of the Pepper families probably resided in the early Merramec community. Some of their records are found in Jefferson County and some in Franklin County which was typical of this community." I also noted that they married into the Hildebrand and Biddick families which were also Pyeatt family relatives and friends.

When her father died in late 1871 or early 1872 in St. Louis County, Missouri, his estate administration claimed that all of the children lived in Eureka, St. Louis County, Missouri. However, by 1882 Teressa and George had moved to Elk Township in Stoddard County, Missouri, where her brother, Christopher, was married at her residence. Perhaps she had lived there longer and her residence was incorrect on the estate record.

In District 42 of Jefferson County, Missouri, on the 1850 census (same district as the Pyeatts) I found #145/145 Lucinda Peppers age 34 born SC with (presumed) children; Lucinda E Peppers age 12 born MO, George W Peppers age 11 born MO, Andrew Peppers age 11 born MO, Nancy M Peppers age 8 born MO, Robert N Peppers age 6 born MO, Clara F Peppers age 5 born MO, and Martha A Peppers age 4 born MO. There were many 'Pruitt' families living near them.

On the 1870 census of T2R11 Monroe County, Illinois, I find George Peppers age 32 born MO with Jane T Peppers age 24 born MO living next door to Jacks Peppers age 30 with Mary Peppers age 20 born MO. This is the only 'matching' George Peppers from the census index. It appears to be George and Teresa Jane Pyeatt Davis Peppers without children.

I found the following census record in Elk Township, Stoddard County, Missouri, on the 1880 census:

This census taker had possibly the worst spelling of any I have seen. All 'George's' are 'Garge', 'Campbell' is 'Camble', etc. The same is probably true for 'Clersey' which could be 'Teresey' and 'Maren' which might be 'Marion'. Ten houses away was Christopher Pyeatt, Teresa's younger brother. Other neighbors included Jack Peppers (who was next door on the 1870 census of Marion Co, IL), James Simanes, William Craig, Isick Andreurs, William Young, Rody Whitson, Jaefe Wheller, John Whitson, William Fisher, Moses Wells, John McNeely, Mat Hartwick, Marchel Pruitt, John Camble, David Bugg, William Whitson, Sam Neulley, John J Wicker, Joel Pruitt, Swift Felix, and James Davis.

John L Peppers was born close to the time that Teresa married John Davis and is almost surely not her child unless he has taken the Peppers name and was not with the newly married couple on the 1870 census.

I searched the 1870 census index for John and William Peppers using different criteria and found no matches.
