Milton S and Susannah Pyatt Fox

Susannah Pyatt was born December 23, 1836 in Indiana and died on February 1, 1917 in The Dalles, Oregon. She was married in Milan, Sullivan County, Missouri, January 25, 1858, to Milton Shaw Fox who was born November 26, 1833, in Vermillion County, Indiana. Milton died May 16, 1909, The Dalles, Oregon and both are buried there. The courthouse records were prior to 1865 were lost in a fire during the civil war.

When Susannah died, someone listed on her death certificate Perston Pyatt as her father and left the mother's name blank. So, either we have a Perston/Preston Pyatt out there somewhere whom Susannah belongs to or the informant was confused/mistaken.

In looking for matching families in Sullivan County, Missouri, where Susannah presumably left her birth family at the time of her marriage, we find the family of David and Elizabeth Sackett Pyatt. The four oldest of David and Elizabeth's children per the 1850 census were born in Indiana - one of them was a daughter named Susannah.

During the 1850 census the David and Elizabeth Sackett Pyatt family lived in Jasper County, Sainte Marie Township, Island Grove Precinct, Illinois. If the Susannah with the family was Susannah Pyatt Fox - wouldn't she have been 13 years old instead of 11? Appearing just below them are the Reffetts. Nancy Fox Reffett was Milton Fox's aunt. Daniel Pyatt married Elizabeth Reffett, 1835. The family of David Pyatt was in Sullivan County, Missouri by 1857 and appeared on the 1860 census without their Susannah.

Susannah and Milton had five known children:

On the 1860 census the Fox family appeared as follows in Milan P O, Sullivan County, Missouri (17 Aug 1860):

  • Fox, Milton age 26 born IL / male / farmer / $0/$190
  • Fox, Susan age 22 born IN / female
  • Fox, Denisa A age (was '22' looks like '11' written over it - but is known to be '1') born MO / female

    This family was enumerated #969/969; their neighbors were #966 B J Lee, #967 John Williams, #968 Thomas G Stephins, #970 David Pyatt, #971 E M Harlin.

They appeared as follows in Scottsville P O, Union Township, Sullivan County, Missouri, on the 1870 census:

This family was enumerated #17/16 pg 297a (ancestry image 3/32) 2 Jul 1870. Their neighbors were #16 Martin Brown (whose son, Francis, later married Melinda Pyatt), #18 David Piot (?Susannah's father), #19 Mary Warren (?Susannah's sister), #20 Samuel Piot (?Susannah's brother), #21 James Baker (?Susannah's brother-in-law), #22 George W Cannon, #23 Hugh Manning, and #24 Wm Harris. So, it is difficult to believe that Susannah would not be the daughter of David and Elizabeth regardless of what is on her death certificate.

  • 1880 Solomon Township, Saline Co., Kansas The Milton Fox family is listed with the addition of Jeptha, James and Mary Warren, Elizabeth Pyatt as mother-in-law and David C. as brother-in-law.

Susannah and Milton Fox migrated about 1893 to Heppner, Oregon, then to The Dalles, Oregon, about 1894. Both Milton and Susanna homesteaded 160 acres each at Upper Mill Creek, the Dalles, Oregon. Both are buried in The Dalles, Oregon.

Delilah Fox born July 5, 1867 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Milton and Susannah Pyatt Fox, married April 26, 1886, in Kansas City, Missouri, George Alfred Wilkerson. They had six children:

Delilah and George followed Delilah's parents to Oregon in 1904. George Wilkerson died in 1906 and is buried there. Delilah moved to Oakland, California about 1920 to be near her son Henry, and so that Flossie, the youngest, could attend Berkeley college. They later moved to Pasadena, California with Henry.
