William died May 28, 1916 at 1410 S Vanderventer Avenue in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri at the age of 60 years, 4 months and 20 days. He was buried May 31, 1916 in the New Picker's Cemetery in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, by the Ambruster Undertaking Company.

William was married c1890 (probably in St. Louis County, Missouri) to Anna Lorraine Mitchell who was born September 18, 1871 in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri and who died March 26, 1946 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.

William's obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch on May 29, 1916 [pg 15] was as follows:
SLEDD - Entered into rest on Sunday, May 28, 1916, at 3:30 p.m., William L Sledd, beloved husband of Annie L. Sledd (nee Mitchell), and dear father of William E. Sledd, in his sixty-first year. Funeral from funeral chapel of William Armbruster Undertaking Co., 423 1/2 Manchester avenue, Wednesday, May 31, at 2 p.m. Motor. Deceased was a member of Neptune Lodge 431, A.O.U.W.(c)
