Calypso

( Part II )

Calypso’s heart fell to her stomach as she heard her mother ask that question. “Wha… what do you mean?” Calypso said weakly. Mylitta looked at her daughter with angry eyes. “Macavity had Jovelyn follow you last night, and she came back and reported back to Macavity. When he found out, he was so angry Calypso. I could hear him screaming at Jovelyn. Then he came back here and yelled at me…like it was all my fault you were stupid enough to leave like that.” Calypso’s sympathy for her mother vanished. Calypso’s eyes were full of angry tears as she stared at her mother. Mylitta looked back out the window. “I guess that’s the part of your father you inherited. It’s too bad he is dead because if Macavity hadn’t killed him, this would.” As soon as she said the words, Mylitta regretted it. “Oh Calypso, I didn’t mean to…” Calypso turned her back to her mother. Mylitta rushed to comfort her with tears going down her face again. Calypso pushed her away with such strength, Mylitta fell onto the floor.

Calypso walked over to the door, and almost ran into Jovelyn. Calypso hissed and raised her paw to hit Jovelyn, but quickly lowered it when she saw two large toms behind her. “Macavity wants to see you,” Jovelyn said, coldly. Calypso noticed a new large diamond collar around Jovelyn’s neck. Calypso couldn’t do anything but nod her head. As she left the room, pulling the curtain closed behind her, she could hear her mother’s frantic cries. Until that day, the halls of the warehouse seemed like home. Now, it just seemed like a prison. A prison that kept her from being herself. She turned left and entered Macavity’s Lair. There was plush red carpet, feline’s dancing everywhere, and a chair in the chair with Macavity sitting in it. “Ahhh… Calypso,” Macavity said. Calypso closed her eyes to fight tears. “I hear you’ve been meeting with a Jellicle?” Calypso stared at him. “An answer is required Calypso,” Macavity said, his voice raising. Calypso nodded. “Well…that’s nice. Romance stories are always my favorite. But you know who my favorite characters are? The ones that come between the two lovers. I really admire those people.” Macavity nodded…the signal for everyone else to leave.

“Come up here, Calypso,” Macavity said. Calypso walked to the front of the room slowly, not taking her eyes off of Macavity. She approached his chair, putting her paws behind her back. Macavity and Calypso stared at each other. “What am I going to do with you?” Macavity asked. “I could just give you to one of my assistants. He could do whatever he wants with you.” Calypso didn’t change the expression on her face. She didn’t even blink. “I could keep you for myself. You would be at my beck and call all the time.. do whatever I said… kill whomever I say to kill. Maybe even that Jellicle lover of yours.” Calypso ran to the chair and began clawing at Macavity’s face. Macavity just laughed and easily held her back. “SIT DOWN!” he said suddenly, the laughter dying. Calypso collapsed on the floor in front of him. “Do whatever you want with me,” she said. “Just please… don’t hurt him. Please…” Calypso looked up at Macavity with pleading eyes. Macavity stared at Calypso, his face expressionless. “I’m gonna kill him.” Macavity raised his eyebrows and nodded. “You are gonna help me find him too.” Macavity had a menacing look on his face. “If you refuse, I’ll kill you, your mother, and Aterrity.”

Calypso walked in the familiar alley, no longer afraid of being caught. “I’m going to do something,” she thought. “I’m not going to stand there and watch Aterrity die.” Calypso kept an eye out for Aterrity. Then she saw him.

Calypso stared at him for a minute, and kissed him. “Hey baby,” he said. “Glad you could make it.” Calypso cried, and whispered in his ear. “No matter what happens tonight, I’ll always love you. Macavity and his gang are looking at us right now. He forced me to come here. Run… please run. Don’t look back.” Calypso would never forget the look of fear in Aterrity’s eyes. “Run!” she screamed. Aterrity ran through the dark alley. “I love you!!” he yelled as he ran. “I love you too,” Calypso whispered. Calypso turned to run but ran into Macavity himself. “This was not the plan,” he said calmly. Calypso could see the anger in his face. Macavity grabbed her and held her arms down to her sides. “Tessertin,” Macavity said. “Go find the Jellicle bring him back… NOW!” Calypso watched in horror as 6 toms ran after Aterrity.

When the 6 toms returned, they had Aterrity in the middle of them. “Aterrity…” she said softly. “Aterrity…” Macavity said loudly. “We finally meet. How good of you to join us.” Aterrity glared at Macavity. “I’m sorry we didn’t get to know each other better,” Aterrity said. They all stared at one another for what seemed like eternity. “Kill him,” Macavity said. At once, the 6 toms enclosed around Aterrity, and Calypso heard his muffled cry of pain. “No…” she whispered. “No!”

The toms circle around Aterrity opened, and Aterrity was lying on the ground. Macavity let Calypso go, and she rushed towards him. “Aterrity… I’m so sorry. I love you so much…please…” Calypso held his head in her lap. Aterrity looked at her and said “I love you to. I always will. Go now,” Aterrity said. “Leave me…please…live for me.” Aterrity’s eyes went blank, and Calypso cried.

Calypso heard Macavity’s sigh from behind. “Calypso…see what happens when you don’t do what I say?” Calypso did not turn to face him. “I suggest you run. We’ll give you a head start, but I doubt it will do you any good.”

Calypso climbed up the dumpster and disappeared on the roof of an old building. She kept seeing Aterrity’s blue eyes widen in fear when she told him to run. Calypso ran blindly with tears running down her face. She ran all through the night, not stopping to catch her breath. Then, in a junkyard she had never seen before, she fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

Calypso woke up to music, and singing. She quietly stood up and walked low to the ground. She peeked from behind a large rocking chair at dancing cats. “Jellicles….” She said softly, new tears forming in her eyes. “Thank you Aterrity…” For the first time in her life, Calypso felt like she was home.
