Copyright 1978 Johanna Lindsey.copyright 1978 Johanna Lindsey.

Sent away by her father to marry a man she had never met, Bettina Verlaine only hoped her mother's assurances of his youth and looks would prove true. Bettina was not to reach the Count's plantation, though, as her ship is attacked by pirates, and she herself is made captive prize of their Captain Tristan. Although a handsome man, she fights continuously against his use of her body, succumbing out of fear of the whip. Feisty Bettina soon sees through Tristan's empty threats of injury and their war begins - one that Bettina finds increasingly hard to fight, as her feelings keep straying from their course of hatred. On his island hide-away, Bettina falls even more under his spell, but cannot resist her chance at freedom when it comes. Finding the Count at last, Bettina overhears his plans for her, but before she can react, she is captured again by Tristan and his men. Reunited with Tristan, Bettina cannot hide her love, but Tristan must face his sworn enemy, as well as an angry father before the two may come together in happiness.
