Arranged to marry a childhood friend, Sharisse Hammond discovers her younger sister's love for the man, and defies her father by refusing. Since her father won't take no for an answer, Sharisse is forced to travel west as a mail-order bride, feeling guilty that it is only a temporary ruse on her part. Meeting the rugged horse rancher Lucas Holt, she has no idea that she too is being used, as part of Lucas' plan to destroy Sam Newcomb, the man responsible for his father's death. Sharisse remains wary of Lucas, but turns to him soon enough after meeting his domineering, scary twin brother Slade. Growing closer to Lucas, Sharisse is puzzled by her feelings, when Slade's unwanted kisses arouse her too. Newcomb surprises the couple when he brings a preacher to the ranch to see them wed, eventually forcing both their hands, as each soon finds out that neither meant to be married. When her family finally comes to her rescue with money to get her back to New York, Sharisse leaves, torn by the loss of Lucas and the words of love she cannot say. When Slade later arrives in New York, claiming to be her husband, Sharisse has a fight on her hands that results in her future happiness, as she finds all of her problems solved, and love wins the day.
