They say that confession is good for the soul. I totally agree. We stand naked before
God day and night. Our every deed and thought is transparent to the Creator. Owning up to our
wrong doings, accepting and bareing the guilt when we are guilty is the issue. Having an excuse
for everything we do is our way of ducking the guilt. You know that we are all guity of
" I did it because.....". God isn't concerned with why we did it, He is only concerned
with the fact that we did willfully do it. God gave us choice, and we exersize that choice
with every decision large or small. To use an excuse of any kind is to say that
"I am not responsible, and since I am not responsible, I am not guilty". You can not be
forgiven of something that you did not do or are not guilty of. But when we come to God in
all honesty, confessing what He already knows, accepting the guilt and taking responsibility
for our own wrong doings, there is no sin great or small that God will not faithfully forgive.
Now you may remember hearing about the unpardonable sin, you ask "what about that one and what
exactly is the unpardonable sin?" The one and only unpardonable sin is the sin of unbelief.
If you believe that there is no God, then why do you bother with feelings of guilt?
Those of us who know that God not only exsists but is our heavenly Father also know that
we are no different or no better than any other human on this earth. We all are guilty
of wrong doings. We will continue to do wrong things, make poor decisions, and willfully
hurt others along the way. You say "I have never, or I would never....", oh yes you have
and yes you will. Unless someone puts a gun to your head, threatening your life, you
made a willful choice and decision every time you lied, gossiped, cheated, took advantage of,
and list goes on and on. Now get real people, not one of us is pure of heart 24/7.
I am very aware of my short comings, aware of my darker side, as we sometimes like to call it.
I try never to play the "holier than thou" games and I try not to be guilty of the "judge now,
forgive later" mentality. Notice here that I say that I "try", I would be a liar if I said that
I was never guilty of such things. I am sure you have heard such statements as " How can he
hold his head up in this community after what he has done? ", come on now, be honest,
you probably are guilty of saying it yourself. Have you ever heard someone say " I can't believe
that the very moment she walked into the church that the roof didn't fall in on her!" "man she
has some nerve to sit up there on the first pew". Any of these phrases sound familar? Well,
let me explain to you how he can walk the streets with his head held high and why the church
roof didn't cave in. It's very simple, God forgives. If you confess your sins
asking God's forgiveness He is faithful and just not only to forgive your sins He also promises
never to remember them again. Now if God has forgiven you of what ever wrong doing that you were
guilty of and has given His word never to remember them again who are you to keep digging it
up? Who are you to remind the world of something that God Himself doesn't remember? If God tells
you that you are the righteous of God in Christ Jesus what right do you have to hide in the
shadows with your head bowed, shoulders slumped, tail tucked between your legs? NONE, that's
right, you have no right or reason to bare the guilt any longer. No one has the right to
keep throwing it in your face, whisper about you within their circle their cronies, or mark
you with the scarlet S for siner. It is ofcourse their choice to do so, but it doesn't make
them right. It makes them mealy minded, small, ignorant people that we should pity.
Now back to confession being good for the soul. I am not now nor will I ever be perfect
but thing I do know beyond a shadow of a doubt is that I am forgiven.
You that are without sin, hurl that stone, hit me with your best shot.
I have confessed my sins and God was faithful and just to forgive me
and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness. My sins God remembers no more.
If you choose not to forgive, neither will your Father who is in Heaven forgive your
sins. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged. What ever you give, you will
receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down,
shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in
giving--large or small--it will be used to measure what is given back to you.
Beware that you don't despise me because in heaven my angels are always in the presence of
my heavenly Father and it would be better to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone
tied around your neck than to face the punishment in store for harming one of God's own.
I will not be pressed down with the spirit of unforgiveness. I will not spend the
precious gift of time with negative thoughts, emotions or deeds aimed at or because of you.
I will not waste an hour with worries of what you may think of me. Never the less,
you do have choice, and if you so choose, go ahead and hit me with your best shot.
