PATRICIA, MY WIFE

INTRODUCTION

On a Sunday, the first day of spring, Pat enjoyed a visit with her granddaughter. That evening she suffered a massive stroke and was rushed to the hospital. The next day, before noon, she passed away. I came home without her, then, and forever. Only those who have experienced it know of the grief and loneliness. After several weeks I began on this page, working with photographs and memories, constructing a memorial to this lady I loved so very much. As I worked I found I could better cope with the grief and loneliness. Now it is complete, and in a sense she is with me, here on the internet.

PORTRAITS

If I had never met you dear...I might have gone my way
And still have had the happiness...Of life from day to day
I might have found some other one...Who cared enough for me
To share my thoughts and hopes and dreams...into eternity
But, oh, it never could have been...as sweet as having you!
No other inspiration could...Have made those dreams come true
I never would have known the joy...Of loving you so much
As now you overwhelm me with...each whisper, gaze and touch
And so I say my thanks to God...That you are really here
And I am grateful to your heart...For loving me, my dear."

James J. Metcalfe

ABOUT THE POEM

Shortly after we were married in 1956, we were separated by a military assignment. I found this poem in a newspaper, and, since it so aptly described my feelings, mailed it to her. While going through her belongings, I found the original copy of the poem. After 44 years it was yellowed with age, but with the same ragged edges where it had been torn from the paper. I would like to say again, "thanks to God that you were really here Pat, and I am still grateful to your heart for loving me, my dear."

Together, we planted this rose the week before she passed away.
She never saw it bloom.
I love you Pat, and I miss you

Song playing is Run For The Roses by Dan Fogelberg,
one of her favorites. It was one of the selections
played at her memorial service
