John HASSELL, JR, son of John HASSELL and Jane WHEELER, was born abt 1704 in Albemarle, Carolina Province, and died abt 1754 in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. He married Rachel UNKNOWN ABT 1727. Rachel UNKNOWN was born abt 1705 in North Carolina and died abt 1778 in North Carolina.

In the name of God Amen I John Hassell of the Provance of North Carolina and County of Tyrrel being Sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be to almighty God for the same and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament first and principally I recommend my Soul to God that gave it and my body to the Earth to be buried in a deacent and christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned and as touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give and dispose thereof in manner and form following.
Imprimus - I give unto my dearly beloved wife Rachel Hassell all my movable Estate of what nature & kind soever to her proper use forever except such legacys as are particularly other mays mentioned.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son John Hassell a Plantation on the west side of Scupperlong River containing one hundred acres and know by the name of the plains unto him his heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Joseph Hassell one hundred acres of land on the east side of Scupperlong River lying on the north side of the Leading swamp beginning at the head of the Leding Swamp at a goom from thence to the populer line unto him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Isaac Hassell one hundred acres of Land on the East side of Scuppernong River on the north side of the Leading swamp beginning at the popler line from thence to the three marked pines at Phelpses Swamp to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Benjamin Hassell my manner Plantation and the said land belonging to it after his morths deceas to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give and bequath unto my two sons Isaac Hassell & Benjamin Hassell a negro man named Robin after their mothers decease to them and their heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give unto my daughter Mary Wynn five Shillings currant money of Virginia to her & her heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give unto my daughter Rachel Ward five Shillings currant money of Virginia to her & her heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give unto my daughter Sarah Fox five Shillings currant money of Virginia to her & her heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I give unto my daughter Esther Hassell five Shillings currant money of Virginia to her & her heirs and assigns forever.
Item - I gave unto my fore sons before mentioned my saws and carpenters tools and coopers tools and shoemakers tools after their mothers deceas to them and their heirs and assigns forever.
Lastly - I constitute ordain and apoint my beloved wife Rachel Hassell whole & sole Executrix of this my last will and testament utterly renouncing and revoking all former wills by me heretofore made ratifying & confirming this to be my last will and Testament in witness whereof I the said John Hassell have hereunto sit my hand and affixed my Seal the twenty fifth day of March anno Domini 1754.

These may certify that Jeremiah Wynne one of the subscribing evidences to the within will personally appeared in open court and made oath on the Holy Evangilist of almighty God that he was present and saw the within named John Hassell sign seal publish pronounce and declare the within to be and contain his last will and Testament, and that he was then and at that time of sound mind and disposing memory and that he also saw Thomas Wynne and Peter Wynne sign their names there at the same time. Then also appeared Rachel Hassell and qualified as Executrix by taking the Oath by Law appointed for the Qualification of Executor ordered that the Honorable James Murray Esqr. Secretary of this province or his deputy have notice thereof that Letters Testamentory issue thereon as the Law directs.

Petition of John Tarkington son of Joseph & Ester his wife humbly show that John Hassell son of John who was the father of your petitioner Esther died some time about the month of February 1766 interstate. being . of a considerable personal estate. leaving 5 children: Joseph, John, Issac, Rachel and the petitioner Esther. .. that the administration was granted to John Tarkington who took into his posseession all the estate of the deceased of value.. about 150 lbs. And also should have made distribution....( indicating that Ester did not receive her share of the distribution.)

Plea. of John Tarkington of the bill of complaint of John Tarkington son of Joseph and his wife Ester....that he is not the administrator of John Hassell son of John father of the Comp. Ester. ... Neither was ever qualified as administrator ...and he .informed ... that Joseph (torn) and Ben Hassell were the Administrators. signed John Tarkinton

In the name of God amen: I Rachel Hassell of Tyrrel County do constitute this my last Will and Testament and desire it may be received by all as such -
I give my body to the Earth from whence it was taken in full assurance of its resurrection from thence at the last day, as for my burial I desire it may be decent at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named as to my worldly Estate I give and dispose of as follows -
Item - I give and bequeath unto my son Benjamin Hassell my best fether bed and furniture and one half my hogs two sheep, one large stone pot, one bread pan one pewter bason two pewter plates and one fifth part of the little necessaries about my house -
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Massey one cow and calf one two year old steer, one counterpin, one pewter bason and five pounds in money -
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rachel German two pounds in money -
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Merritt one cow and calf one fether bed, one bolster, one sheet, and one blanket one tea kettle, one pewter bason, one pewter dish, one side saddle - and one fifth part of the little necessaries about my house -
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Esther Hardison three pounds in money -
I give and bequeath unto my daughter in law Rachel Wilkins one shiling sterling money and no more -
I give and bequeath unto my gran daughter Rachel Fox one feather bed one boelster one sheet one blanket one lining wheel one chest and one cow and calf -
I give and bequeath unto my daughters Mary Massey - Rachel German Sarah Merritt and Esther Hardison all my cloaths to be equally divided amongst them -
I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Hassell all and singular real and personal the remaining part of my Estate and do constitute and appoint my son Joseph Hassell - Executor of this my last Will and Testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29 - day of October Ammo Dom : 1778.
