The Fox

Welcome to the fox's lair. This is my favorite animal and my totem animal also. See, here I am playing with my puppy, Psycho.
We foxes are amazing creatures. We're adaptable to many different places and climates all over the world. There are many different kinds of foxes. There are red foxes, like me, arctic foxes, silver foxes, gray foxes, bat-eared foxes, kit foxes, fennecs, all kinds, living in all different places. The red fox in itself is a great variety. Why, the red fox can be black, red, brown, white, or any combination of these colors. We red foxes are known by different subnames according to our color variations. Let's see, there's cross fox, black fox, silver fox, brant fox, and samson fox. Sometimes we get mistaken for arctic and foxes, too, but there's no way I nor any other red fox would ever live in Alaska with those weird arctic foxes. We prefer the warmth of the woodlands in North America, Europe, and occasionally Australia. That's right, Australia. My species was introduced there to help control the rabbit population. Poor rabbits. I prefer being a scavenger. We can be either one. Not all foxes are brutal hunters as some people seem to think. Some of us eat leftovers from other animals or even plants. Then we hide our leftovers in a little hole in the ground called a cache. That way we can finish it later. When we do eat animals, we actually prefer not to eat peoples chickens and other pets. We only do that as a last resort when people kill off our food supply. We prefer insects, mice and rats, and small critters. Aren't those the animals most humans dislike? So, why do people have a problem with us foxes? Oh, well, I'll never understand people.

A little about the red fox.

As I said before, My species is known by many names. We eat small rodents, insects, fruits and rabbits and leftovers. We do this for our fourteen years of life. In the winter time, we begin to feel, well... frisky! After the winter mating season, there is a gestation period of 51 days. After this, we give birth to anywhere from one up to ten babies, called kits. This only happens once a year, unlike some other animals. We aren't really social animals, but we do mate for life. In our foxy household, or should I say the den, there's usually just two parents and the current kits. The last year's kits moves out.

Our Enemies

People are really our only enemy. We have little else to fear. Humans hunt us for our fluffy coats and they even hunt us simply for fun. They kill foxes just out of the enjoyment of watching us run in fear, hearing us cry, enjoying our pain. You may think it is funny to watch us be ripped apart by dogs, but I assure you, if the tables were turned, maybe you'd think twice. That is, if some miracle gave you a second chance at life, after being confronted with a hunting squad. All those people, dogs, horses, all against one helpless little fox. It's not fair. Then they leave us to die. We're nothing but a laugh in death to some. This has to be stopped!

Help us survive!

Ban these brutal sports!
