LESSON 2

WALTZING WITH THE CAMERA

You experienced formal camera use for the durration of a project, in Lesson 1.

NOW

HAND HOLDING THE CAMERA, is the point to this lesson.

PREMISE
When you hand hold a camera, it is impossible to hold it still.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE THE CAMERA MOVEMENT MAKE SENSE, put the movement to music.

Camera Setup - plug a cd or cassette player into the Camera microphone input - plug your head phones into the camera. You may use any shoulder or carrying support -"You can build"- !

You should use the camera with 'BOTH' the eyepiece, and the fold out window (if available),

Choose music you "

YOU CAN DANCE WITH

I was serious when I said waltz with the camera. (or what ever dance you can do smoothly)This exercise is going to be a contrast to the rigidity of the first lesson. Now you are going to illustrate the music you hear by showing, the subject of your choice.

OK 'I KNOW THE WORD CHOICE CAN THROW YOU OFF'
collections - BUTTONS TO BOWS, FROM BULLETS TO BATONS OR ROCKING HORSES TO STAMPS. Various buildings or a collection of them. Moving portrates of 20 or 30 people, (short quick)

this will help you - almost all musical scores have stops(movement to a stop)
How many times can you tell the same story in the same piece of music. use flashes - freeze frames of all stops - the best picks of the rest of the frames -

when you are ready to stop videoing one item - back the music up and give your self a place to edit in the next scene in the musical score.

You really are getting a break here, you dont really have to plan the shots - because you are going to let the music determine the way you show stuff -

Try to look at as many things as possible as possible and dance from one view to another by moving and dancing to the feeling you have.

KEEP BOTH YOUR EYES OPEN

You are going to put it all together in editing again.
