Social Security Death Indexes
Not everyone who has, or has had, a Social Security card will appear on the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). The SSDI lists only those individuals for whom a lump sum death benefit was paid. Many other enrolled persons are not listed either because their death was not reported or they are still living.

PROBATE RECORDS
WILLS
JAMES DIBDEN: 1859
Source:
LAW REPORTS; COURT CALENDAR; SURROGATE'S COURT; 12 Feb 1859
Will of JAMES DIBDEN - This was an application to have a nuncupative will admitted to probate. The deceased was second mate of the brig Starlight, of Boston, Massachusetts, and shipped from the port of New-York for Constantinople, and died after reaching the latter port. While at sea and very sick, he told the witness who took care of him that he wanted all he left behind to go to Samuel Warburton, his most intimate friend, whom he called his brother, although in fact he was no relative. This was repeated on many occasions. He uniformly said that he wanted "his brother Sam to have all he should leave."
The questions on this state of facts were - must the declaration have been made to more than one witness to make it valid and effectual under the statute allowing unwritten wills to be made by a mariner at sea - and was it necessary that it should have been reduced to writing and witnessed in the usual manner when the deceased arrived in port. Decision reserved.

ANC/1850: U.S. 1850 Census.
The 1850 census was the first US census in which the enumerator was required to record the names of everyone in each household, though relationships weren't noted. The official date for the census was 1 June and although the day of enumeration may have been some weeks later, all the information supplied was supposed to refer back to June 1st.Other information required was - age, sex and colour; birthplace and occupation; the value of any real estate; whether the person had married within the previous year; whether the person was literate, could speak English, and if they'd attended school within the previous year; and finally whether the person was a pauper, deaf, dumb, blind, or insane.
ANC/1860: U.S. 1850 Census.
Enumerators of the 1860 census recorded the names of every person in the household on a preprinted form, allowing more accuracy than in precious censuses. Required information included name; age (on census day - 1st June); sex; color; birthplace; the occupation of persons over 15 years of age; the value of any real estate; whether married within the previous year; whether deaf, dumb, blind, insane, a pauper, or a convict; whether the person was literate and could speak English; and whether the person attended school within the previous year. No relationships were shown between members of a household.
ANC/1920: U.S. 1920 Census.
The official census date was Jan 1st and all information supplied was required to refer to the person's status on that date, regardless of any change. For example, anyone alive on that day, but since deceased, had to be included, but children born since that date were excluded and changes in marital status were ingored. The census was very detailed and specific, going far beyond the basics of age, sex, marital status, occupation and birthplace etc.
In addition to their birthplace, each person was required to state their colour, their mother tongue and whether or not they could speak English. Furthermore they were required to give both parents' birthplaces and mother tongues. With education in mind, they were asked if they could read or write, or if they had attended school at any time since the previous September. Those of working age were asked for more than just their occupation. The industry, business or establishment they worked in was asked for, along with whether they were employed, self-employed or an employer, and whether they were paid wages or a salary.
Apart from their full address, householders were also required to state whether their home was rented or owned, and if owned, whether it was free or mortgaged. It was noted if the property was a farm.
For immigrants, the year of immigration was required; whether were they alien or naturalised - and if naturalised, the year of naturalisation. Everyone was required to state if they could read and write or had attended school since the previous September.
ANC/1930: 1930 Census: The 1930 Census was begun on 2 April 1930. As with previous censuses, on enumeration day people were required to give information that referred back to their status on April 2nd, regardless on any change. Information required was very similar to that of the 1920 census with additional questions regarding the value of owned homes, or monthly rental, where appropriate; whether the household owned a radio set; at what age did the person first marry; whether the person in work on that day; whether the person was a veteran of the U.S. military or naval forces and if so, from which war or expedition.

IMMIGRATION RECORDS
The earliest record found to date comes from Ancestry's Passenger and Immigration Index. The sources for this entry were:
1) Peter Wilson Coldham's 'The Complete Book of Emigrants' (in 4 volumes) which contains the most comprehensive listing ever published of the men, women, and children who emigrated to America from England between 1607 and 1776, compiled from original English records. The records include people who left for political, religious or economic reason. These volumes, and two other books by the same author, covering immigrants who were transported, are available on CD from Genealogy.com
2) Cregoe D.P. Nicholson's 'Some Early Emigrants to America', originally published in 'Genealogists Magazine' (London) Vols. 12-13 (1955-60) and reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, in 1965. Names about 1000 people who indentured themselves in 1683-4 to serve in the plantations of Virginia, Barbados & Jamaica (also includes a few for N. York, N. Jersey, Pennsylvania & Carolina)

PASSENGER LISTS
Source: American Family Immigration History Center
The American Family Immigration History Center is located in the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, New York, and has made its immigrant arrival records available for searching and viewing on the World Wide Web. From 1892 to 1924, more than 22 million immigrants, passengers, and crew members came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The ship companies that transported these passengers kept detailed passenger lists, called "ship manifests." Manifests were used to examine immigrants upon arrival in the United States. Images of the original manifests can be downloaded.
